I am having a lot of trouble deciding how to equip crisis suits and a commander with 8th. Any Tau players have any advice one whats looking good and why? Any feed back and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

I have only played 4 games of 8th edition...but that's 4 more than many people.

Quad fusion commanders are dirt cheap and really good. Hitting on a 2+, wounding most vehicles on 3+ and doing d6 damage at -4 rend? For 160 points? Absolutely. It's a shame you can't run fusion on a Coldstar, but that's probably a balance thing.

Crisis suits are trickier. Fusion is way more expensive and way less reliable than on a Commander because hitting on a 4+ sucks. I like flamers. For 207 points you can get 9d6 autohits; but you have to get realllll close. That either means calling Mont'ka on turn 1, which still won't work in anything but Dawn of War or against armies that will come to you on top of turn 1. OR you have to bring a Stealth team with Homing Beacon and drop them in; which leaves them hung out to dry. So it gets super wonky now. You have to charge something after you shoot, preferably a vehicle, because they won't do much damage to you, and you have to try and surround it, using a command point re-roll to roll higher on the charge if necessary. Surrounding the vehicle (or other type of non-flying unit) means it can't fall back, which means you'll be locked in combat, and because YOU fly, you can then fall back(or forward if yuo want) in your turn and still shoot. But in order to surround most vehicles, you have to take Crisis in units of at least six, which now gets super expensive, even with the humble flamer. So your mileage may vary. I think they're fun; not sure yet if they're good.

I've also tried plasma, which also requires you to be very close, but I think Vespid are better as an anti-heavy-infantry platform.

I think the trick is to take commanders and not to take crisis suits at all.

The new battalions ask you to take a lot of HQs. In fact, the more HQs you take the more battalions you can bring, and the more command points you get*. Commanders are really efficient because they are actually pretty cheap and get to carry 4 guns anywhere you want, hitting on 2s.

Ultimately you're paying the same amount of points per gun whoever you stick it on, but crisis suits are probably the worst thing for any gun to be attached to. They are expensive, inaccurate, and not all that fast or tough.

Commanders are arguably better than broadsides too. Why take a HYMP broadside when you can have a commander with 4 missile pods? A commander with fusion blasters does way more damage than a HRR broadside, and can be dropped in to do that damage virtually anywhere.

Commanders look like they'll work quite well with ghostkeels and fire warriors in devilfish. You want something else nearby to distract enemy fire, and fortunately there are loads of options. I particularly like the idea of forcing opponents to shoot at a ghostkeel with -2 to hit.

*Potential trick. Take two 5 man squads of breachers or normal fire warriors and embark them both in the same devilfish. You can get 6 troop choices into 3 transports. Then they get to run out in all different directions to grab objectives. And you can potentially have some recon squad's pulse accelerator and grav inhibitor drones embark with them, if you want.

So if you have multiple Commanders can you declare Montka or Kauyon multiple times (but still one a turn?)
