We had a very fun, casual day of 40k at our local club (it can host up to 4 4x6 tables... and its my basement ). Everyone made 1.5k lists (8 players) and we rolled 2d6... highest two totals were a team, and pair that way on down. Games all were paused, but while many of us have had the rules awhile, this was our first real games. 1 table was Crons and Sisters vs Nids and Tau (lol), the other table was Chaos and Grey Knights vs Ultramarines and Orks (again, lol). Took our time, double checked rules, had fun, really really like the new rules... everyone felt lethal, everything felt killable, nothing seemed broken...

Curious, how was your launch days guys?

I didn't go because I haven't played 40k in years; and not sure if I wanted to get back into it or not - but now I'm feeling like I missed out.

My FLGS was packed. They set up spare tables outside.

Took The Boy down with me, he’s just getting into the game. Everyone brought 1k lists, and most games were doubles or triples due to turnout and number of tables.

The Boy and I won our first game vs. a Necron footslogging/BA mechanized team up. Second game was later when things were quieting down, so just a 1v1 with The Boy. He won that one, 5/3.

Fun was had by all.

Was great! Did a midnight release at our LFGS, then had some games this morning in my basement for folks that couldn't make it that night. The new system plays like a dream, with everything being new and fresh. Having anything being able to hurt anything, even if not by much, is a HUGE deal. There's too much for my to say in such a short post, but wow, what a game! My friend who couldn't ever memorize even just the to-wound table in previous editions remembered this one easily, and was up and running in no time!

Everybody had 500 points list we turned in and the manager shuffled them up and dealt out pairings onto the tables.

There were way too many people, something like three times as many pairs of players as there was tablespace and even more people walking around.

I shared my battle reports in the IG Discussion and Rumor Roundup Thread, but the short of it is: I played 2 matches with my Imperial Guard. I brought a Pask Battle Tank, a Leman Russ Punisher, and a squad of Stormtroopers as my token troops choice. I faced Space Marines and Orks, and beat them both quite handily.

I had fun, and I think so did most of the other people. My tanks worked like a charm, ripping up Marines and Boyz alike, and I'm happy.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

About 30 people in my local GW. They formed a queue that completely formed a ring around the interior of the store. Many, many preorders. Manager made more money in one day than last year's entire best week, near Christmas.

There was pizza and cupcakes. I played a 2v2 game with 8th edition rules (took a very long time, but that's learning games for you), and assembled Skitarii for an hour or so.

Went out to lunch with a bunch of people from the store, and had 30 minutes of someone explaining Electric Universe Theory at me while I was trying to enjoy my burger.

My buddy got all the books. So we sat around reading them for a bit. Hadn't bothered to read rules before release date. Then played a game of Necrons vs Tau. ....Necrons felt OP. Mainly because of their leadership 10 and a bit about their get back up rule being every turn.

I went to my FLGS when they opened to get my copy. I was the first one because they pulled everything out of the back in boxes - all of the dice, objective markers, objective cards etc. I don't think too many people have 40k on their radar at that store because they still have three copies of Shadow War: Armageddon. So I was the only one there for 40k and they still had all of the stuff that was sold out online. I had to dip out and start running other errands, so that's all I got to see.

I got all the Indexes, but the GW Store I went to didn't receive Rulebooks yet (?), so I'll have to wait a week on that. There was probably 20 people in the store (Woodbridge Ontario). Been going over army lists vs what I have painted and hope to get a 50 Power Level game in Sunday afternoon to try out the Rules (from the Primer) with a Mech Tau army vs his Sisters.

Also super happy to find that Dawnstone DOES MATCH my old Codex Grey Tau paint scheme.and my will to start painting Tau again is reborn.

Had a great day of gaming at my FLGS. I brought my Dark Angels since that is my premiere army and I wanted to kick the new edition off with them. I had a blast! 8th is super fun and definitely more deadly than ever. The games would have been faster except that everyone was constantly having to look stuff up, so very few if any games made it a full 5 turns. For more of my impressions of it, see the latest entry in my P&M Blog: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/270/647095.page#9436504

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Apple fumbled on digital Codexes, so the rulebook I preordered didn't unlock until nine, but my FLGS had an open store copy so I managed. Tried some of the leaked FW rules and found the Relic Contemptor and the Fire Raptor hilariously destructive; the latter especially, spraying 24 heavy bolter shots a turn at 3+ to hit after moving was just up and deleting anything in its path. The missiles and the main gun didn't really get to fire, I'd just declare "the Fire Raptor is focusing everything on that unit" and it'd explode to heavy bolters before I rolled anything else.

(Supremely worth it, even for 19PL/418pts, in other words. I haven't been playing 40k Marines since 30k came out, but now I've got to start porting my loyalist Death Guard's lore forward to their 41st-milennium incarnation.)

Played a Power level 100 game against a guy at the store I had never met before. Not a ton of people in the store, we have a very small but somewhat active core of people with a ton of people interested and slowly getting in with the skirmish systems like shadow war.

Lesson learned, power level 100 is a pretty dang big list for IG, especially for going into the game for the first time. That said, even with that many minis on the table, the game played surprisingly fast considering we were essentially learning the rules as we played and had a lot to keep track of.

IG are great, I felt like I was really applying what I knew about IG to win. I used screening units, dropping in things like stormtroopers, having to be smart with orders, knowing when to hang back or be aggressive, or just plain focusing fire. We played a Maelstrom mission and that really added to the game too, especially with command points. Command points especially add a surprising amount to the game. I used a variety of strategems throughout the game, from rerolls, to a LD pass, to drawing an extra card. There was far more strategy than I ever experienced in 7th.

My one irk so far is that it seems a bit too easy for me to disengage from combat and punish my opponent by using "Get back in the fight" and firing into the hapless unit I disengaged. I'm really surprised there's not an attack of opportunity for the assaulting unit to get a free swing at units attempting to run away. That's my only real complaint though.

Also I'm really surprised how much people are afraid of IG command squads with flamethrowers. Had a guy advance so he ran 12" and flamed a unit, was pretty insane. Same thing gives meltas quite a bit of utility as well, and for IG gives us a reason to put shotguns on our vets again.

Overall I'm digging it.

My FLGS had a midnight event on Friday for the official release. People were playing 8th edition earlier that night from leaked copies of the rules, and everybody seemed to be really enjoying it. Lists weren't optimized yet, as people were still working through the rules.

I got to see Dark Angels Deathwing with Land Raiders tear apart some Raven Guard, a very well-painted Blood Ravens marine army get Smited to death by Tzeentch Demons (he never failed a psychic test or suffered Perils the whole game).

By far the highlight of my evening was watching a couple buddies of mine throw down 2000 points of Tyranid Swarm vs. a 7th edition-style Tau Gunline. Entertaining moments included the Swarmlord and a Trygon Prime dumpstering a Stormsurge over 2 turns and Commander Farsight beating a Broodlord in CC by steadfastly refusing to fail a 4+ invulnerable save.

I haven't gotten the chance to play 8th yet , as I only just now got my rulebook and index. Read through both today, going to try to make a solid Eldar list tomorrow.

8th Edition has seriously rekindled interest in 40k for my FLGS's community, and all of us couldn't be happier!

I do think missions are going to be really important going forward. Kill Points really favors certain kinds of armies, and the new deployments can give assault units a lot of opportunities for Turn 1 alpha-charges. Fortunately the new Maelstrom tactical objectives are a massive improvement over the previous incarnation, to the point where using the Strategem to discard an objective instead of the old house rule might become mandatory.

FLGS did a midnight release - Friday Night Magic got a huge boost, from the usual twenty people to fourty two, the manager/owner took advantage of most 40k players being ex-MtG players and made FNM beginner bundles (pre-built deck, booster packs, rules reminders and updates, pizza and entry to FNM) probably could have been closer to fifty but a few guys who used to be MtG players wanted no part of any FNM ever, the remainder just had money/time issues.

I kind of feel bad for the people who usually play MtG - three extra rounds with noobd had to take a toll.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Had a great midnight release party at my FLGS with Pizza aplenty and lots of games going.

I played 2 games total, first being a 1v1 against Thousand Sons and the second being a team game, 2v2 with my BA & Ultramarines vs. Space Wolves & Infantry IG + a Knight.

Knights are crazy hard to take down. It all but destroyed 3/4 of my force single handedly, but my team mate and I managed to kill it before game end with my yeam mate doing most of the heavy lifting.

Overall it was an awesome afternoon & evening, with lots of games going and fun had by all.

Looking forward to more games next weekend at the local Comic Convention this coming weekend.

Take it easy.

Had a few games at Janco Toys in Barnsley when picking my rules up.

First Impression, the game is fun again

We ran 50 power level games just to get the feel of it, ending up with games that were wildly imbalanced, but played quickly - think power levels will be fine for large games but smaller levels, use points.

The points system is cumbersome, more than it needs to be, but will likely be largely automated away so not a problem.

Loving the movement rules, welcome back M stat, I've missed you, by gork that simplified things, the Psi system is nice as well and movement powers are sweet.

Yeah, overall impressed and happy, love the KEYWORD system, something I've wanted for years, defined terms make the rules a lot easier to read, the book is reasonably well laid out, so far the only gripe...

the 'Smite' power is buried in the rulebook, could do with being repeated in the Indexes where other psi powers are listed, minor quibble really though (expecting cards eventually anyway)

Indexes are somewhat bland, but given what they are this was expected, would have been nicer to have the UNALIGNED stuff either in every book, or in its own slimline book - e.g. say a few pages within the rulebook shrink wrap as everyone can use these things but doesn't need the 2nd Imperium book.

Yeah so far 4.5 out of five

Am I missing something - I re-read the document multiple times and didn't see anything...

- So, my guys can move one way, shoot two other units, and charge something completely different? There's no restriction on charging what you shot at? Okay...

- What is the point of non-LOS blocking terrain in this edition??

Movement is never affected by terrain? Even in the advance rules, if I have tank traps, a vehicle can move through them, at their normal speed, unless they try to advance or charge, and even then, only the advance/charge move is affected?

There's no move penalty for moving over just about anything, only charge-distance penalties.

There's no cover for shooting through units? If I try to advance my guys behind a screen, there's no cover? I can freely target any opponent unit (except characters), and no cover? If my dreadnought stands behind a tree that obscures 95% of the model, there's no cover?

I don't understand how they screwed this up so badly. The influence of terrain and screening movements should be among the most important things in a wargame, otherwise you're just pointing and rolling.

Closest 'local' store did a midnight event that was very busy, around a 100 people in all, with some cosplayers even. I did not get to go then. Later Saturday morning, the store was pretty quiet. Almost everyone had picked up at midnight. Box games were still available then, but rulebook and index supply was very low already. Most of the swag was gone by the time I got there, as well.

Got in a couple of games at my FLGS, there was 30+ people there, we had smoked pulled pork, free drinks and a raffle, it was a regular party, minus women, beer, and a circle of people smoking a spliff outside thinking they are sneaky. Guard, bugs, and dark eldar seemed to be the most common armies, and I saw another necron player for the first time in a long time.

The other necron player lost to dark eldar, but said it was a ton of fun. I beat space marines with my necrons and guard with my dark angels, though the guard victory was on points. Chatted up a bunch of people, everyone seemed pretty happy with their rules in this edition, and the dark eldar players were over the moon with the changes. Going to have to add them to my list of opponents I want to throw down with in the future.

Most interesting for this board I chatted up the owner of a very successful ebay store that focuses on miniatures. I was joking with him about his nice new stock of Eldar and he told me that a lot of cheese farmers had sold them for dirt cheap, but they were moving fairly well, seems a lot more people are interested in them now that they no longer have the stigma of being crazy OP. He said the real losers were vanilla marines, he was still moving specific chapters like wolves and dark Angels, but demand for vanilla marines had more or less died off since primaris marines were announced.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

Maybe there isn't one, and more terrain should be considered LOS blocking. Or we could just use more LOS blocking terrain instead of the alternative.

OTOH, terrain that offers elevation has a point - looking over LOS blocking terrain.

Well, if you stand on that terrain, non-LOS blocking or not, you do get cover, no? As far as my impressions goes for this edition, cover is for elite squads and not for blobs.
