I'm new to 40k and am building an Ork army. I currently have ~500 points painted and wanting to grow my Waaagh. I'm looking for some units that are flexible enough to function at 500-1000 points while also being useful at higher (2000) point levels.

I'm open to most units I am looking jump into some games to 8th. Right now I'm a bit torn between Bikers, Meganobs, Stormboys, and Tankbustas.

I currently own the following (mix of painted and not):

About 75 Boyz (about half shoota, other half slugga choppa)
13 Nobz
10x Gretchen & 1 Runtherd
Deff Dread
Warboss Grukk
(who I'm just using as a normal warboss)
Painboy
2x Trukks
1x Battlewagon

Thank you for the help.

yea i'd go for some fast stuff.

storm boyz (these chaps can charge airborne flyers ) or bikers would be a nice addition to what you have.

if you are gonna use the grots i'd have them at at least 20-30

maybe even a dakkajet

weird boyz are a nice hq to get in there as are painboyz (well the mad doc as hes better for barely anymore pts)

As for flexible, useful units, that a pretty good tie between meganobz, tankbustas, and bikes.

Stormboyz are........ok. Least they were, only used them once in 8th. They're actually not bad with zagstruk around.
I suppose the 2 ppm extra for 12" movement is far from bad. But I generally find them to be a 'for fun' unit.

I love tankbustas, and they're pretty good in 8th too. But don't waste your money on the official models, just make your own. Take the rokkit from the ork boy kit, put it on a ork boy, you've got a tankbusta.

Bikes are still a pretty solid choice, fast, tough, shooty, and choppy. Their biggest problem is they are expensive models, at around $15 each. Actually obtaining enough to effectively field for a new player is a somewhat daunting prospect financially.

I like meganobz a lot. They picked up an extra wound and usually get some kind of save from mega armor. They cost enough points that you're not really going to need to have a lot to spam, so while they are also ~$15 each, you also don't need to have 15, like you do with bikes.

So, my two cents, the most cost effective and solid choice to grow from the choices you offered are tankbustas and meganobz.

meganobz right out of the box are pretty good, and if you look on ebay and the like, you should be able to wrangle up some tankbusta bitz relatively cheaply too. Toss them on your boyz and you're set.

I have only had a couple of games of 8th, so limited experience. Flash Gitz did some serious work for me the other day. I also happen to like Freebootaz (Ork Pirates) a lot. Weirdboy worked nicely as well. You can kitbash a couple weirdboyz out of the Nobz box easy peasy.

If you want to make meganobs, take a look at this.

I would want a few storm boys to be able to charge through walls and unts while denying overwatch. I imagine that could come in very handy.

Thank you everyone for the help! Stormboys & bikes are next on my painting list. I'm gonna look to add a Weirdboy and Dakkajet as the army grows for sure. I really enjoy the AoS shaman & the jet model.

If you have the bits for it, definitely convert one or two of your nobs to have a Waaagh banner.

I am a big fan of wartraxx this edition, best to magnetize and make/ mob thigns for rokkit packs so you can mix and match to points availability, but T5 W6 4+ armor 4 attacks, also gives a decent tar pit unit

10000 points 7000
6000
5000
5000
2000
