With pesky characters hiding in units and buffing them with their auras snipers are going to be important in 8th.
Who are going to be you're snipers of choice?
I'll be playing Tempestus Scions (I wanted to play them in 7th, not jumping on the band wagon... promise) so i'm thinking of having them joined by some ratlings or a vindicare but want to find out what people think about all of the different snipers before settling on one.

In an edition where snipers are necessary, snipers are weak. I've yet to find one that actually does the job its supposed to do rather than sit around being dead weight.

Here in the AdMech we have the Transuranic Arquebuses, 25 pts/weapon. 60" S7, AP-2, 1D3 Damage, every 6 to wound does an additional Mortal Wound. They're shot by units with a 3+ to Hit so they're pretty nice but pricey I guess, they have the advantage of being able to wound way more than squishy Characters and deal a lot more Damage than regular Snipers, while with a longer range.
The Vindicare I've seen him quite a lot here on the forums, never saw it myself in game as of now, but he looks really decent.

I think sargent telion and a unit of sniper scouts for around 200 points isn't bad. Because they can split fire they could easily knock out 2-3 characters a turn.

+1 to hit is nice but a sniper squad alone has to do something like average 4+ unsaved wounds to a character to knock em out
i dont think a single squad is doing that with split fire against 2-3 characters.
maybe 3 with absolute god luck. where everything hits followed by 6s across the whole roll.

I use D-Scythe Wraithguard with a Wave Serpent. Always go full D-Scythe Wraithguard with a Wave Serpent. Also, iirc, psykers can cast Smite on whomsoever they choose, as it's not shooting. So Farseers and Warlocks.

Smite is forced to target the closest enemy all the time, so no luck there.
Any other offensive power is fine though.

I hear that ratlings outdamage a vindicare until their numbers drop, but he's always had abspecial spot in my armies. Vinny's the first model I REALLY painted and I like to deploy his skills whenever I can! It's hard to pass up the admech heavy snipers though, those things are a thing of beauty.

Smite must be cast on the closest target. So you can only target the character if it is the closest model to the psyker. It does work if that's the case, though.
Take it easy.

Agreed. I think sniper are going to end up like AA guns in 6th edition: touted as something vital to take, yet underpowered for the job they are given, almost useless at everything else, being weirdly absent for a number of armies, and end up ignored for more ad hoc means to take down the target.
As such, my "snipers" of choice are going to be stormboyz. Just jump over whatever the character is hiding behind and beat the living crap out of them

I think the Vindicare Assassin is a pretty effective sniper, although you either need 2 of them or another source of sniper fire (like sniper scouts) to reliably kill a character in one turn.

Pretty much. I don't have any Hydras, I always meant to get one or two, but instead it turned into a Wyvern, and I was about to then buy another Hydra because the first one ended up forever staying a Wyvern before realizing that I, in fact, did not need yet another Wyvern. I just brought along a Quad Gun on my ADL to shoo away any flyers, and accepted that I wouldn't beat Flyrants or the Daemon Flying Circus.
With regards to snipers, I don't think I'll be using them. If I need to go through all that infantry, I've got a Punisher. Maybe I'll convert a Vulture, and have that be my "Sniper". Also, Celestine.
I do love the fact that the Wyvern, Manticore, and Basilisk were the best "snipers" in the IG. It was so very Imperial Guardsy.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

I think the ratling horde is the way to go. You need a volume of fire to generate enough mortal wounds to knock out characters. They also benefit from commissars.

I've got a squad of scout snipers I'll be using. I don't expect em to remove all characters isntantly, but they'll likely make any IG players a little more cautious with their commissars.

Squads of snipers are the best bet. Rangers, Ratlings and Scout Snipers are supreme. Single Snipers like the Vindicare are not able to do enough damage since all characters have multiple wounds now

Until I land on you and eat you. Or at least prevent you from shooting. Really, I think the heldrake can be the best sniper if it has a place to set down on the tabletop. A sniper need not eliminate the target, just eliminate the target's threat. Of course a good general will never allow that to happen, so psychic phase it is for chaos!

With Deldar I don't think I'll be able to rely on killing characters- against a good player no assault unit will make it to them, regardless of their mobility.
I plan on carving a path to them whenever possible.

Vindicare Assassin is my go to guy. Twice he's taken 6 wounds of a character in a single turn.
Just don't like that his accuracy has dropped, a Canadian sniper recently pulled of a 3km kill but Vinny can miss point blank.
