Hi there, recently got back into 40K 8th edition and enjoying it so far. I decided to write up my evolving experiences on my blog, so if you have the time or inclination to read it here's my battle report's, most recent first;
Cork has tons of 40k players, you have the games workshop and outer realms in cork city. When I played last UCC and CIT had 40k clubs and I think their is a local club called the The Brethren Wargaming Club Cork. There used to be a skibb wargaming club too with some excellent players.
I would use facebook to find the various groups. The Irish warhammer forums seems pretty ded, replaced by whats app etc I guess.
I really liked The Battle of Lernin Kerv. Guard against Tyranids is one of my favorite matchups in 40k. Maybe because it is the most human/relatable army against the most alien/unfatmomable army. Or maybe just because of the great sci-fi movies and books it reminds me of.
This game did justice to the matchup with plenty of carnage and the great models and terrain really brought it to life.
Project log and campaign featuring Orks, Imperial Guard, Marines, Tyranids: http://www.xhorikwar.blogspot.com/ Currently focused on our Horus Heresy campaign with White Scars, Death Guard and Imperial Militia.
Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!
Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."
"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."
DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.
Really enjoying the campaign against the orks! Keep up the good work, I love it when people take the time to write a narrative component to their reports. These are fun to read
Side note, do you have special rules for psychic powers for this campaign? I ask because normally Dylan wouldn't be able to cast Da Jump twice in the same psychic phase. Not that the orks need it to krump 'umies good an propah
I know this is a bit late but after reading your first battle report I think you were doing the consolidation wrong from the picture I saw of your Guardsmen against the hormagaunt.
So yes, it does say closer to the nearest enemy model. However... if you're say, half an inch away you can move anywhere as long as you end up closer to that nearest model. So your guys could have piled in quite a bit more.
Also don't forget that the back rank can fight when they're within 1" of someone else who is within 1" of an enemy unit. So pile them in close and with the 25mm bases all your guardsmen can hit.
Fun reports! Keep up the good work.

Some nice write ups there. I am based in Strokestown County Roscommon, not too far from Cavan. Glad to see that there are more gamers in rural Ireland.
We'll have to see about arranging a game at some point in the future.
I usually go to Sligo Gaming group (they are on FB) for my miniature fix. Trying to start a gaming group in Strokestown, so far mainly boardgames and MTG.
The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.
@Mantube, I'm glad you're enjoying it. As we're playing a narrative style game Dylan can try to Da jump twice in a psychic phase. You're right, at the moment the Orks are properly kicking the dung out of my Astra Militarum. But most good stories have an initial period of despair for the hero (me) and a montage scene then a decisive battle at the end where I win. Hopefully.
@ArmchairArbiter thanks for the input, it was my second game and I was only learning. If memory serves there was a Chimera and another unit of Guardsmen hemming me in.
@stonehorse yes we should defo try an inter provincial championship 40k style! PM me if you're even up this way.
