I recently got into Warhammer 40k through the game Stormcloud Attack. I had so much fun playing it I decided I wanted to make my own models. These are the first models that I've built and painted, so any constructive input is welcome!

First off, the dakkajet. It's modeled off the Deff Skwadron comics. I wanted to beef up the profile of the plane and give it more of a P-40esque profile. The bombs are magnetized so it can be a clean dakkajet or I can leave them on because I like the way they look.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
After building the dakkajet, I wanted to go a bit more off piste and try my hand at a more scratch built model. I wanted to build a dakkajet that is in the process of disintegrating around its pilot and being held together solely by the belief that it will still fly. I tried to get it to look like it was falling apart but still generally cohesive. I don't think I went far enough on the falling apart end, but I'm still pretty happy with it. This was also my first attempt at weathering a paint job. Again, I'm happy with it but I don't think I went far enough overall. Comments and constructive input is always welcome.

"Who's that flash git still flyin' without 'is wings, Gimzod?"
"Gorthank, boss, who else would it be?"
"Heh, good ol' Killboy. Look at 'im goooo!"

Dang dude, you jumped in head first for your first models. These look absolutely fantastic!

If you ever give the falling apart effect another shot it could be cool to have some wires and hoses flying all over the place with metal plates attached in a way to make them appear as if they are "floating" around the model.

I wanted to build something a lot larger and decided on building a blasta bommer. After messing around with the idea for a while, I didn't really like the weapons or design so I decided to take it in a different direction and base the build off of the battlefortress' load out. It's going to be a flying boat style plane. This is still very much a work in process so any input is welcome.

This is the rough shape of the hull and placement of the turrets. There is still a lot of work to do fleshing it out.

My first sketch on the general direction I want to take with the build. I'll likely make the engines (there will be three) a bit smaller and I still haven't figured out how I want the tail boom to work coming out of the back of the first jet engine. I need to figure out how I am going to duct the exhaust. Also, the nose will likely be tweaked still. Like I said, just a general direction I want to take still.

Great stuff. I think there should be wings flying off the one, you know, a bunch of parts stripping off and back. I can't wait for this huge PBY looking bomber thing to get completed. Thanks for sharing and keep it coming!

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

Novasetri: I can't believe I didn't think about wires and broken hoses. That would be the way to do it for sure! I'm wondering now if I can retrofit that model without totally destroying it...

Edwardmyst: I originally thought about adding wings in the process of being ripped off. I decided against it because I wanted it to not be so much in the "just disintegrated" category as the "he's been flying around for a while without noticing his plane isn't a plane" category. As for my flying PBY, here's the update!

I've pretty well got the general shape of this thing blocked out. There really is only the wing struts and central connecting column to add before the overall structure is complete. It's slow going but it is coming along nicely.

Here are some of the internal skeleton.

I started plating it and boy is that a pain! Even slight compound curves are really tricky. I am really happy with how it is coming out though and glad to be done with most of it for now. I also got it mounted up on a base.

As always C&C is welcome. Also I don't have a name for this plane yet, so throw out some ideas!

dang dude your styrene work looks very measured and precise. It's looking really good so far!

May I ask how you managed to achieve the curvature form right behind / above the turrets? it seems like a flat piece of styrene shouldn't bend like that but maybe my eyes are just playing tricks.

Thanks! It's actually a couple pieces to get that curve like that. If you look at the frame picture, you should be able to see what I did. The plating was just laid directly over on top. I glued everything down a little bit big and then trimmed to fit. I tried cutting before gluing and I was literally going insane trying to line up all the curves and such.

hmm, i'm going to have to try and mimic that.

Ok, so i've been obsessing over this idea of the disintegrating plane and had to put a thought out there. along with the wires and all of that to show the plates falling apart - what if you had a grot near the back trying to hold on to what's left of the tale end of the plane. could be cool...

Novasetri: I like that idea as well. I think I'd probably have the grot hanging off the foot of the ork as he got blasted out of his turret and grabbed the first thing he could. "Get off me you git!"

A little more progress on the yet unnamed flying battlefortress. I have the central wing connecting column pretty well blocked out as well as the cockpit. I'm excited because now I can get to the wings finally. I ran out of tubing so that's why the third turret only has one barrel.

As always, C&C is appreciated and I'm still drawing blanks on naming this plane so suggestions are welcome.

Its the work of a suitably deranged level of genius, I love it, hats very much off.

The disintegrating plane idea if good and very well done.

And loving the flying boat, seriously OTT and very well executed to boot

Names?

It almost feels like there should be a massive air balloon to lift the ship. Though with the orks I realise that's not that necessary.

This is BEGGING for some bits from the Kharadron Overlord airships! Amazing plasticard work though. Truly inspiring.

I think one day I'm going to commission an artist to make me Killboy tearing into a dakkajet from the side trying to steal it.

Your broke to bitz dakkajet looks great I'd add wires sticking out with extra debris coming off.

Thanks for the comments! I really appreciate them.

Sunbane: It's definitely going to have wings. It would be fun to build an airship at some point, but they would get really really big I have a feeling. This is much more a medium bomber sized aircraft.

Sal4m4nd3r: I just looked that kit up and definitely! It would certainly same me a lot of time fabricating some of the details I want to add. Good call! Now to find a cheap kit to chop up.

I got the tail boom and engine blocked out last night. Pay no attention to the bottle sticking out the front of the engine. It's just there right now as a counterweight to the tail before I glue everything together. The tail boom itself is looking a little bit weedy for my tastes so I'll be bulking it up. Just got the wings to go now on the basic build, then I can start the detail work.

I'm liking it so far, do you have a mock up for the pilot canopy?

Zomnivore: A post back or so, you can see the canopy that I do have set off slightly. I'm not going to use clear plastic. I instead wanted to give it an armored truck sort of look, very much the the windshields for the Rhinos. I'll add the details so it looks like armored windows shortly.

It's been slow going lately, between work and lack of motivation, I haven't made a whole lot of progress. Only real progress was taking off the engine mounts that I had and mounting engines #2 and #3. The wing is just sitting in place for now. I am going to magnetize them to make transporting the model a bit easier as it is already getting kind of large.

In other news, as I have been lacking motivation to work on the still unnamed flying boat, I did start on a project I've had in mind for a while now...

I got some work done on my new project last night. It's going to be a Wazbom Blastajet and tricked out in kind of that old rat rod style. I'm excited to see how it is coming along. It's a nice intermittent break from the big plane.

As always, C&C is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks! I'm moving the thread over to a new one in the P&M Blog section of the forum. I didn't even realize it was there when I started this one. You can find it here.
