Was a bit confused by the new morale system the other day. I think we played it right in the end but let me know if we did or not.

Wyvern shoots into a group of 20 bloodletters killing roughly 12 of them. I believe a bloodletters morale is 7 for whatever reason and my opponent rolled a 5 or a 6 for his morale test. We couldn't quite work out the math but he ended up just scooping up the rest of the squad as losses.

How should this have worked?

Let's say he rolled a 5.

12 dead models + 5 on the roll equals 17.

17 minus his leadership of 7 means 10 flee.

8 remaining bloodletters minus 10 fleeing leaves.... less than zero.

He did right in picking up the rest of the group.

Let's say you have a unit of 20 models with a Leadership value of 7. Let's further assume that there are no other rules in play that impact Morale.

If you take 12 casualties in a turn, at the end of the turn, you roll a D6 and add 12. Let's say you rolled a 5. 12+5=17. 17 is 10 higher than your Leadership. 10 more models would die. since the unit only has 8 models remaining, it is completely wiped out.

And this is why Daemon units should NEVER take more than 10 models per unit. 2 units of 10 is way better than 1 unit of 20.

In this scenario with the Bloodletters, the Wyvern would have only killed 10 'letters from unit A, but unit B would have been unscathed.
So lesser Daemons are encouraged to take big units because they get bonuses for it, but because of the basic Morale rules they will never get to use that bonus.
Oh, and we are forced to use CP to avoid further loses due to Morale, instead of on better things like re-rolls

So a 1/6 chance. Or 11/36, if you drop a CP on a reroll.
