Hey guys,
I'm about to build a 5-man (Tactical) Terminator Squad for 8th - but I'm not sure which options to take - how many chainfists, or Flamer vs Assault Cannon.

I'm building an overall "take all comers" type army, though usual opponents for the army at this point will be infantry heavy and armour-light, though a lot of Power Armour. This army is similar at this point.

There'll be a Tartaros terminator squad down the line, which will most likely be kitted for close combat. Points aren't a concern at this point, all of the group armies are in the process of being built, and it's a "rule of cool"/"fun"/"fluffy"-type group.

Any advice or thoughts would be great.

I think Chainfists are well worth the couple extra points; ensuring the base 2 damage and the -4 AP are both big. And Assault Cannon all the way. Assault Cannons are just great weapons pretty much any place you can take 'em right now. Plus, since you have to land 9" away from the enemy models and can't move, the Assault Cannon will at least give you value the turn it arrives.

- Imperial Fists - 7290
- Deathskulls - 6150

Good question.

besides the chainfists i think it will depend on how you roll.

Flamers are kinda meh in that its not usable off a drop, nice for overwatch but otherwise meh.

you can double down on anti infantry with bolters and assault cannons (assault cannons being really cool models)

not sure how to feel about cyclones.

its a ton of points for a double Missile launcher.

You'll only ever need 1-2 Chainfists per 5. Any Heavy Weapon works fine too outside maybe the Heavy Flamer if you're teleporting in.

Thanks guys!

So maybe hold the Heavy flamer for the Tartaros Squad and go Assault Cannon with the regular Termies? 2 Chainfists

Should I double down and put a chainfist on the AC guy, or give both to other troopers?

Any particular advice for the Sergeant?

As a Space Wolf player I am a big fan of the 5 Thunderhammer/Stormshield layout.

However we have supporting characters like Arjac that go in with them.

Sarge doesn’t have any options in a basic tac TDA squad. Learn to love the SB/sword combo. Of course, that’s not half bad these days, and keeps the points down.

I’ll agree with the assault cannon being the best option.

Mechanically, I think the 2 points over the powerfist is worth it for as many chainfists as you want to take. Before, you only needed one or two to carve up tanks. Now the more the merrier. I’d take them on everyone. Partly, just you you can roll all the attacks together, but I think it’s worth the points. That said, you want some basic fists for looks, go for it.

I support the full chainfist.

However i think the cyclone has his place if you lack anti-tank. It's basically 2 ML free of model price, 26 point less than in a dev squad wich is also less resistant. Also open up character assassination.

I have altho no idea on how to equip assault ones.

Thanks. I'm also in the process of building a Dev Squad with 2LC and 2ML, so that'll help with the AT, and there's the option to add some Rapiers as well.

I'm going for TH/SS on everyone but the Sergeant, because he has 3 attacks naturally and therefore gets 4 with the Claws. 4 Hammers is 4 hits, which is more than plenty to get something down.

That said you might be safe with the Shield. But hey, at least LC aren't useless anymore!

Claws work better on Space Wolves where they get the +1S in addition to the rerolls, they have a 5/9 chance of wounding a Land Raider and are pretty cheap too. Claw + SB > PF + SB for wolves I think.

I’m enjoying the LCs on my capheractis. Being able to wound everything T7 or less on at least a 5+, with the re-rolls, and the large number of attacks makes them a threat to a lot of targets. If I was building them these days, I’d put a chainfist on the sarge and keep the rest claws. The claws work by volume, and you will want to spam a lot. The chainfist/hammer you only need one or two good hits to make a mark.

If I was building another assault terminator squad, I think I’d still want a mix. I’ve classically run mine 3 TH/SS, 2 2xLC, where the sarge is one of the guys with a hammer. Mostly because those were the blisters I could find, but I’ve grown to love it as a flexible choice. Better these days where everything can wound everything.
