It really isn't tricky at all.
40k's lore is intentionally cataclysmic in scope, specifically so that any chapter you can imagine and any special traits and kinks they have is possible. Just make up your own stuff and have them be from a little known moon in the god-knows-where system. There is nothing wrong with making your chapter exactly what you like. If you want to stick to some kind of lore, then read some books and make something up off of that. If not, you can play Angry Marines if you want, or anything in between.

Its fine and often hilarious fun when done right.
and then there are the mary sue marines. the favorite successor the the ultra marines. single handedly against all odds wiped out a hive fleet of screen without losing a single guy. also name dropped by the big E.
Ether take it serious and make it something that could be in the universe
or take it WAY out into left field and make something fun.
anything in between will cause some major eye rolling.
