Seems obvious doesn't it? Tyranid Warriors aren't a troop choice?  They are, well,... Tyranid Warriors? Not tyranid leaders, or tyranid hivenodes etc right?

(I suppose they could be all 3, HQ Elite and Troops.)

The problem with Warriors being a Troops choice for a standard Tyranid list is that they'd compete with Genestealers and Gaunts, two of the most valuable troops types you can field. It's actually a boon that they're in Elites.

Now, it would benefit a Godzilla list...somewhat. The catch there is that those armies don't really use or need the synapse and Genestealers are more efficient rending claw platforms, point for point.

Fair enough, but please realize I dont see Genestealers and Gaunts as good choices at all.  Genestealers cost as much as marines for 1 T4 5+ save and they cant even shoot.  I call them Bolter Food.  They cost even more with upgrades and gaunts have LD 4 so when the hivemind is gone they're a waste, most easily dealt with by killing the Hive Mind.

That depends if you play the Carnifex as taking the hive mind checks it's supposed to. Actually 'Zilla 'nids do need hivemind, I'm surprised everytime I watch a game where Tyranid players just ignore the Hivemind rules for Carnifexes.  Maybe Genestealers are better for rending claws, but they don't shoot do they?

Ultimately it's kind of a fluffly thing too, even if all your assesments are correct what would it hurt?  Imagine, my way someone could make an old school army of all tyranid warriors, like in the Advanced Space Crusade days, but you could be free to take all the gaunts and stealers you want if that's your preference too.

I wouldn't have a problem with this as a house rule. Tyranid Warriors are such a poor choice (points-wise) on their own that an army built of them would be in real trouble.

Both Spinegaunts and Genestealers are quite better when you break them down by point compared to Tyranid Warriors.

Yes, Gaunts require Synapse to operate, but that is a basic premise of the Tyranid army. It isn't too difficult to make an army configuration that has enough Synapse ability so that the Gaunts function fine for the entire game.

The one thing this change would really, um change would be the ability to take an ALL shooty Godzilla army, which would actually be kind of cool because I think Tyranids should be able to shoot if they want to.

So you understand my viewpoint, I'm actually more of a proponent of Warriors than many here. However, I also recognize that Raveners and Genestealers are more efficient RC platforms. The three differentiators for Warriors are synapse, their ability to field guns if you choose (Raveners can get them, but that makes them too expensive for my tastes), and the fact that they don't compete with Gaunts and Genestealers for Troops slots. If you're running more of a horde list, you can see why points 1 and 3 are important.

That depends if you play the Carnifex as taking the hive mind checks it's supposed to. Actually 'Zilla 'nids do need hivemind, I'm surprised everytime I watch a game where Tyranid players just ignore the Hivemind rules for Carnifexes.

They do take instinctive behavior tests, they just stand still if they fail them, as they can't fall back.
