I thought about this today while contemplating how silly it is they are so big. They are giants amongst their own race, so how do they copulate, they have needs too right? Especially with all that testosterone and adrenaline that is pumped into them.

There is only 2 alternatives. Either with themselves or they seek other races. Maybe this is why so many of them mysteriously disappeared?

What other races are there that could sate their hunger? I think ogryns are smaller then a primarch right? Well that leaves tyranids and greater daemons, maybe a tame squiggoth?

This is probably a question most dont want answered but we must remember, if we want 40k to be a living and breathing universe we have to explain all aspects of its inhabitants lifes even if uncomfortable.

They don't have needs - they don't even have the necessary parts (glands, hormones, ect) They have all been replaced with modified parts that help them be better warriors. It really is that simple.

This is true for even your most basic space marine.

I think the Primarchs are impotent and infertile, as the Space Marines created from their geneseed are also infertile. It's also likely that they simply do not have the desire (well, at least that might be true of Fulgrim before his corruption. Now god knows what he has going on down there).

Also primarchs come in different sizes. Magnus was described as a giant even before ascension (and is absolutely huge post-ascension) while Alpharius was so short that the taller members of his legion could pass as him with no trouble.

Read the Space Wolf fluff - particularly Lukas the Trickster.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

In Horus Rising, a female Remembrancer meets Garviel Loken and reflects that his enhancment into an Astartes was "a sad loss". I think this is a pretty heavy implication that the modifications in becoming a Marine mean they lack either the urge or the ability to procreate.

In Fulgrim, when the whole ship descends into depravity, the mortals indulge but the Marines instead try to find new sensations through violence and noise. None of them attempt to join in the orgy. Given the setting, it would strongly imply that they lack the necessary functional equipment.

As for the Primarchs, they were genetically engineered from scratch to be warriors and generals. Why would the Emperor want them breeding? Quite apart from the genetics of such offspring, falling in love with a woman and having real children (as opposed to Marines created from his geneseed) would potentially be a massive distraction.

Lukas apparently bedded all those women before he became a marine if I remember (which was the amazing part; he somehow had the stamina the night before the selection test and still somehow aced the latter).

There was even old lore that described a naked space marine and he was basically a Ken doll with a little nub presumably still for urination.

It's less clear with primarchs, though the fact it is never mentioned and SM are based on them makes it likely. It's a decided grey area in lore, never directly referenced to my knowledge. The closest it comes to discussing it is the fall of the emperor's children, and that's vague and focuses on other types of excess.

The only real canon exception to this is CSM of slaanesh, and while this has been toned down it's still canon that hermaphroditism is a "common" mutation amongst them. Assuming it's just adding additional sexual characteristics, there may be more space marines with functioning lady bits than there are with functioning penises. Which is kinda funny.

This information is very worrisome. It basically means all creations of the emperor are soulless, will less automatons. Without desire.

When I say desire I mean any kind of desire. For triumph, for food, art, anything.

But some must obviously have had desire, or none would have fallen.

It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

For th EC, I would wade in and suggest there's a metaphorical aspect to it. Being post-human and above human concepts like love and fear, perhaps they are above human urges like sex. Even with Slaanesh, who encourages excess, it still makes sense. To such a post human being, who can experience the strength, speed, and all other enhancements of an Astartes...surely plain old sex is a bit mundane? Its something everyone can experience. Boring. Why would they not experience something truly worthy of experience, the violence and rush of battle and war, the adrenaline and noise and smells.

People think Slaanesh excess just means orgy, sex, debauchery. Its so much more than that. Its being an adrenaline junkie, a sound junkie, a vision junkie. Its sitting back and appreciating that you are dying and murdering other people in a fashion so perfect, so poetic, there will never be anything like it again.

I hope they don't bring Fulgrim back. If you're effectively in paradise, there's no reason to leave, ever.

And, if the ultimate realization of pleasure in the mortal realm is by killing, that seems a bit wonky.

Attempting to give this thread some sort of legitimacy when followed up with statements like this makes us cry.

No, we just research and actually read the fluff/lore rather than spouting random nonsense.

I think the Space Wolves are the only ones who still partake of things like drinking and sex, and the latter is only hinted at a few times. Otherwise, they don't have the desire to reproduce and are sterile.

I think Space Wolves only do it as matter of culture. They are viking based and GW's very simplistic depiction of that, would also include the false, stereotype of bedding a lot of women.
