So, I saw this at a local store, but not sure if I should buy it. What exactly is it?

It is this:
Spoiler:

A squad of Sisters of Silence, plus a Rhino to transport them.
A squad of Adeptus Custodes, plus a Land Raider to transport.
And a Custodian Dreadnought.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Or more specifically, from the GW website:

Talons of the Emperor is a box containing a collection of Adeptus Custodes and Sisters of Silence miniatures.

A 5-man set of Adeptus Custodes, which can be used to assemble one of two squads – one armed with guardian spears, one armed with sentinel blades and storm shields. One model can be assembled as a shield-captain, with a cloak and choice of 2 heads, and one model can wield a Custodes Vexila. Includes 5 Citadel 40mm Round bases.

A Contemptor Dreadnought, armed with a choice of multi-melta or assault cannon. Includes a Citadel 60mm Round base.

A Venerable Land Raider, armed with lascannons and heavy bolter, with options for storm bolter, missile launcher and smoke launchers.

A 5-woman set of Sisters of Silence, which can be used to make either a Vigilator squad, who specialise in melee and carry executioner greatswords, a Prosecutor squad, who operate more flexibly and carry bolters for longer-range combat or a Witchseeker squad, who carry flamers for devastating multi-target assaults. It includes 6 executioner greatswords, 5 Umbra-pattern boltguns and 5 flamers as well as 2 special heads for a Sister Superior.

A Null-Maiden Rhino, armed with storm bolter and smoke launchers.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Are they playable as a force in 40k? Pardon my ignorance, I haven't actually played 40k since 3rd edition.

I like how they look, but I don't need any more models for models sake.

As their own force, no. They don't have any HQ units to speak of. They exist as a way to add flavor to another army as allies, due to sharing the Imperium tag. You can add them to a Marine, Guard, Sisters, Mechanicus, or Inquisition force.

Personal (fluff only, as I haven't played it yet) opinion is that a couple squads of Sisters of Silence (and a Culexus assassin) alongside a Black Templar force for -4 to psychic tests will seriously annoy all Brimstone/Magnus/Herald players out there. And the fact that those models in the front means they can't even be targeted by Smite which also requires you to aim at the closest unit...

And the Custodes are supposed to be beatsticks that are like Terminators dialed up way past a ten.

The dreadnought is also available in the first Horus Heresy Betrayal at Calth box.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

The Sisters of Silence are annoying, but they're also kind of expensive and underarmed for more general engagements since they're so specialized. In practice most opponents will just shoot through your 1W/T3/3+ bodies before they're more than mildly inconvenienced, they're only really effective against daemons.

The Custodes are expensive Terminators without 8e Deep Strike as a delivery system; they're nice to have, and 3W is actually a significant upgrade over 2W against multi-damage weapons, but I don't know that they can do enough damage to justify their inclusion and putting them in that Land Raider is an absurd amount of eggs stuffed into one basket that isn't general-purpose enough to be useful in an 8e army.

There are components of the box that are usable, sure. A few Sisters of Silence mixed into a force to screen against smite-spam can do some work, a Custodes squad strategically placed can scare off enemy melee units and attract anti-tank firepower away from important things, Rhino/Land Raider chassis are always useful. But would I recommend buying the box and trying to field it all at once as an army? Absolutely not.

Money wise it's a solid buy (usd) since your practally getting the vehicles for free, I'm aiming on getting a 2nd to support my sisters of battle army

It's easy to assume that people arguing an interpretation you disagree with are just looking for an advantage for themselves... But it's quite often not the case.

Vigo. Spain.

If you want a pure Talons of the Emperor force, Saint Celestine is your HQ of choice.

Thats how I run mine. Celestine, Greyfax, Tempestus Scions, Sisters of Silence and Custodes, with Rhinos and Taurox for transportation. I use the Custodes basically to protect my rear guard and take the objetives more nearby my deployment zone. If you put them into a objetive, you can be asured that nothing is gonna move them without investing a TON of points.

They aren't very competitive because they lack sinergies between units, but as they have many units that are powerhouses by themselves (Scions, Celestine, Custodes) they can carry the lead.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

I run my Custodes with an Inquisitor, Greyfax the two games I played, and it went well. I'm considering picking up Hector Rex though.

I've been pondering how to attach custodes to a space marine force without losing CT on my space marines,

thinking maybe a Primaris Psyker

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
