This is ace. I usually use the pinch first method for chains but that way you have to do it away from the model then put it on after youve made the chain, which is always fiddly. So this really helps.

This is great, but what I really want is someone to cast a bunch of this kind of chain in resin or plastic. The "jeweler chain" just doesn't have the same robust appearance as good sculpted chain.

Free-hanging chain would be immensely difficult to sculpt by hand, but perhaps some 3D-sculptor could tackle this with comparable ease? I know of no one to ask, who could master this detail level, sorry, but perhaps you could ask around here or send requests to 3D-sculptors on e.g. Thingiverse or Shapeways?
Jeweller's chain is a good hobbyist's friend and I like it for its airiness in the links, but it doesn't always bend as well as needed, and sometimes a sculpted chain works better.

I've sculpted "free-hanging" chains by wrapping greenstuff around a pin in the shape that I want the chain to hang and then sculpting it:
This example doesn't look very good, but that's probably just due to my lack of skill.

Probably a bit late to the thread here, but a 3d printed chain would be flexible like a real chain if made correctly in 3d.
If sculpted correctly, it would could be made as a real chain - albeit a fragile plastic one.
The biggest challenge would be getting rid of the layering artifacts. It would take a lot of careful sanding. Downside to it would be that it couldn't be easily duplicated with a mold and resin. You'd need to print off a new one every time.
