Hello
I struggle to find a good use for fortifications in 8ed, especially buildings such as Imperial bunker / bastion.
First I thought of hiding my havoc in there, but even bunker costs almost as much as a unit of havocs, and only one unit can occupy a building now (as opposed to 1 inside and 1 on the roof like in 7ed).
Had anyone had positive experience with fortifications? some good use i have missed, even if situational?

I can see a case for putting dark reapers or devastator centurions (if you're using them at all) in a bunker.

A bunker allows you to protect glass cannon units. Reapers in particular are liable to attract a lot of hate, so a building can help there.

You can also ram them full of characters. One way to help go first is to set up loads of units in transports of various kinds, and fortifications work in this role.

They are overcosted

Decked out guard Veteran squads in bastions are OK especially wit a VSG. (3 plasma, heavy flamer, lascannon)

VSG is great with Guard

And on a casual basis a bastion is probably the only way to run kataphron destroyers

There are also two niche and rules bendy ways to abuse fortifications

Number 1 take an imperial defence line which counts as one model declare as your warlord. After deployment it becomes terrain and cannot be killed. So downside no warlord bonuses upside your warlord can't be killed.

Option 2
Fortification network
3 x bastion
Fortification neywork
2 x bastion + VSG
Vanguard detatchment
5 x veteran (lascannon 3 plasma heavy flamer)
With a few pts left over scion, scion command squad and heavy weapons team's. So you can capture an objective somewhere or deal with that tough AV unit.

So our 5 bastion's come in at 100 W T9 3+4++ putting out a lot of firepower
4 IK come in at only 96 W T8 3+5++ for comparison
And you've still got 50 W on the inside.

Now to make it really abusive mount them on a large hilly crater to make one gigantic piece of scenery. The VSG should be in the middle sunken with the bastions all around it completely blocking line of sight. Naturally you will want a comm relay on the roof of each bastion to create spikes of los so your bastion doesn't have its LOS broken. This keeps the VSG safe.

Now because of the designers note if you can't physically remove a model from the battlefield because it's glued to the surface of your crater hill its wrecked but not removed, models can not embark inside it but it says nothing about not still blocking LOS. So you can keep all your bastions VSG on the field until every piece is removed because they are all glued and mounted together and they can't be individually removed.

So very tough and decent firepower park as far forward over objectives and just try and shoot your opponents objectives clear it will be close but you won't get tabled
