So, in the chapter approved book, it seems that there's going to be something for open play regarding vehicle construction rules:

"We are also bringing a whole new feature to Open Play. Designing and building your own vehicles is a feature that hasn’t appeared in Warhammer 40,000 since 5th Edition. We are going to trial some new rules to allow you to design your very own Land Raider variants and field these behemoths on the battlefields of the 41st Millennium."

I started playing about the end of 5th, and I don't recall what these rules were or how they worked. Does anyone recall how they were used and/or have thoughts on how they could be implemented into 8th?

It is of particular interest to me because I've probably got around 9 or so looted vehicles which no longer have any kind of rules, so it would be interesting to find a way to field them once again. Though, I honestly think that is a bit optimistic. Still, I hope it's going to be more interesting than just 'different ways to bring land raiders'.

To me this just screams ORKS so I'm wondering why they chose Land Raiders and not something else.

It sounds awesome though

Because SPESS MERRENZ get all the good toyz first.

Still, curious to see what will come of it. Hope it's more than 'glue more guns to a land raider and have it be a legal model'.

Hopefully it's as good as the old rules. Anyone remember the Deodorant tank?

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

My thought is since its for open and not matched play I don't care.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Yes, these rules I believe refer to looted ork vehicles, usually a lesser, more ramshackle version of any vehicle they've managed to get their hands on.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

They going to use this so that if they don't republish rules or discontinue models, you will still have the option of using them the way you intended to. Aka: this is how you build a Looted Wagon.

Given it's open play, they may be using it as a test run.

I don't think it'll be anything amazing. It'll just be like the old carnifex rules where you had like 18 weapons and upgrades and you get to bolt on whatever you want.

Truly glorious times they were.

I suspect this will be the weapon swap rules we have now with some additional pieces of equipment to affect the stat line. +X points for a faster engine that's more likely to explode, +X points for an additional armor package, etc.

I hope they extend it to all vehicles. I'd love to make a LR punisher with a hull mounted punisher Gatling cannon and sponson punisher Gatling cannons.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

The vdr rules were super fun, and could be super abused. Thats for both 3-5th edition versions, and the "weapon swap" rules in 2nd. But I've got nothing against them, like I said, super fun!

Why just Land Raiders though... hopefully that changes soon.

Between Alpha and Omega, and a little to the left

Hopefully it's not just land raiders and it's just an example. And expecially I hope that if they hammer these rules out that'll result in looted wagons rules for Orks. It's a major pipe dream but good lord that would be amazing.

On the other hand, it would not surprise me if it ends up getting used for land raiders with no weapons

Gonna toot my own horn and throw out my vehicle and monstrous creature design rules linked in my signature for 7th edition.

I have sent them every iteration, and showed them the feedback I got. I hope that in some small way helped drive them to make an official version now.

I've been putting the math down recently, so it will be interesting to see if it lines up. (It will also be nice not to have to go through every weapon in the game again and try to extrapolate points...)
