I was just curious what people use to represent Space Marine Lieutenants since(to my knowledge) there is no actual model for it. Do you just paint an ordinary Space Marine slightly differently, do you add certain bits to make him stand out, or is there some method to "officially" make one that I am unaware of? Thanks for any input!

Currently the official Space Marine Lieutenant model is only available via Dark Imperium (its the two guys on 40mm bases) However they look just like normal Primaris Marines with some unique equipment and a bigger base (I think one of them just looks like a normal helmetless sergeant, he doesn't even have unique weapons).
Modeling wise, they're just primaris marines with the correct equipment and on a 40mm base. Maybe something to make them stand out (like a backpack banner or special painted helmet) but otherwise nothing special. If you got either a promotional Primaris Marine or some of those Easy to Build ones, you're bound to have an extra body or three that you can convert to use as Lieutenants.

I am sorry. I was referring to a standard Space Marine as opposed to the Primaris fellows. I should have been more specific.

Im just going to use some old Vet Sarges with powerfist + bolter combo. At least one of them has the fancy bolter from the command box set, too.

Like all marines, they look like the rest of them. On the other hand GW has averaged at least one SM commander/captain per year, and truckloads of bits, so there isn't exactly a lack of things to make a LT out of.

Pick your favourite pieces. Stick them together. Paint them up nicely. Call them a lieutenant.
I suggest that a jump pack and combi-plasma would provide a good mix of mobility and firepower. Combi-melta if you expect more armour.

Like any captain, get right Base, some nice fancy bits or mk 3/4, a few stern guard or vanguard parts and add glue
Mix n match parts n spares and you could make make 5 put of a vanguard or stern guard kit.

I'm simply using what I would otherwise use as a Sergeant, but without a squad obviously.
I found them to be pretty good in melee (hitting on 2s), so it gives me a good reason to put the power weapon Sergeants back on the table.

I use the official model:
(and yes, he has a captain’s heraldry on his shoulder, but the rank marking/model it’s self is a LT.)
But in a more helpful vein, Just build something fancier then a sarge, but not quite as blinged out as a captain. I’m in the process of building one with a JP, and not quite happy with where he’s at. The FLGS should be getting in a UM upgrade sprue for me, which should give me the fancy bits I need to make him work.
One of the Vet boxes should probably be all you need to make one. Just paint on your rank markings, and maybe alter your paint scheme a bit to make him stand out a bit more.

The main thing is the helmet is red with a white stripe.
Here's mine - made with a random Forge World model called the Legion Morariat... kind of a gunslinger thing. I bought a job lot of Red Scorpions bits and the Mortariat torso was in there. Couldn't work out what to with him so stuck on a power fist and a combi plasma, then made the backpack magnetised for a jump pack.

Generally the same with any other SM character that doesn't have specifics (like chaplains and their skull helm or apothecaries with their needle arms); just make him more blinged up.
Most people would expect at least blinged up to Sternguard level. If you just have a generic bolter marine as your lieutenant, even if it's technically correct, it's gonna raise a few eyebrows.

I'd make him about the same as any other SM commander. I don't like bling but obviously his weapons would look a little more special to help my opponent understand my deployment set up.

Have an exault! No School like the Old School!
On topic, one bit of fluff is that old armor is more revered and quite possibly better either because it was made with lost techniques/components or because over time it acquires a machine spirit from generations of users.
So getting one of the plastic Horus Heresy marines would make a stand out character.

I'm using this: Neither Redemptor Dreadnoughts nor Reiver Squads are in our list of allowed units from the index, however, GW says we get access to them. As a result, based on this I'm working off the assumption that GW has given us new units that weren't in the generic SM index but are in C: SM. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to use Redemptor Dreadnoughts or Reiver Squads like they wanted us to. This is a somewhat controversial assumption on this forum, apparently, with people throwing a hissy fit every other time it's brought up, but then again everything and its mother is a controversial assumption these days so I simply fail to care about that. edit: fixed link, apparently I removed it somehow in my first edit...
