Do you have a favorite FOC slot that you tend to max out when you build your army (and which army do you use)? Is there a FOC slot that you don't use - and why? Is there a reason behind why you always load up on certain units?

Personally, I love bringing Heavy Support. Elites may be more killy, but there's nothing like having the ability to "nuke 'em from orbit" like heavy support often seems to bring to the table. Conversely, I rarely pick Fast Attack options. In my mind (whether correctly or incorrectly) they generally have only plinking firepower and racing to objectives isn't my cup of tea - without support, they get blown/forced off objectives pretty easily.

And while I don't usually fill out the FOC slots, I tend to bring a lot more Troops than most people I've played against - and in max squad sizes.

It never ends well

It depends on the army I am playing, but from a pure numbers perspective I take more heavy Support, with elites being a close second for my chaos armies and eldar armies. When I play space marine though (Salamander) I go troops and fast attack.

I don't mind hq's, but the Supreme command detachment isn't something I would ever use. I play my armies with as many body's as I can, and hq's get in the way of that. So I take what helps and what I need, but I don't ever go over 3 at most so yeah...

It really depends on the army, but overall I tend to like Fast Attack the most and Elites the least.

Armies I play-
Dark Angels: Love fast attack, don't love troops. (Tactical squads are boring.)
Astra Militarum: Love troops, don't love elites. (Although now that Veterans are elites and Heavy Weapons Teams are heavies that'll probably change.)
Sister's of Battle: LOVE fast attack, don't love elites. (Coincidentally the very best and very worst categories in the Index.)
Grey Knights: Love HQ, don't love troops. (Would love the Troops if they weren't criminally expensive points wise.)
Tyranids: Love troops, don't love fast attack. (I play a big horde and it just looks freaking awesome.)

I rarely use Lord's of War or Flyers.

It's pretty rare for me to write a list that doesn't have a few units from each category, and overall I prefer mobility based heavy mid range firepower armies. I don't like static armies (it's boring to play and play against) and I don't like full on assault armies because I like shooting stuff more than stabbing stuff. I like to maneuver and shoot, shoot and maneuver, and occasionally charge whatever is left. All my lists have some kind of firebase, several mobile elements, and a counter charge unit or two.

Best: LoW and flyers, preferably LoW that are flyers.

Worst: troops. Troops are boring, them.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I play csm(gonna go the black legion royte woooo) so for me elites is probably my favorite slot due to all the cult troops being there + terminators and chosen. Heavy support would be my next favorite

1st Elites - Marauders, enough said.

2nd HQ - Gotta pack those malefic lords in!

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

First I wanted to vote Heavy support, then I realised that all of my heavy support got thrown out of my DG codex So I chose troops, as no matter what my army looks like, there are always some troop choices and they always do their thing. And usually troops are the iconic units of a faction.

Least favourite I chose flyers. Don't own one, never fought one, most look stupid and a 40K battlefield is too small for them. Good thing my Drones are Fast attack .

Favorite: Troops. I also love transports.

Least favorite: Superheavies/Lords of War, IMHO they're the same thing. Flyers shortly behind them.

The dark behind the eyes.

For my Imperial guard:

Favourite:

HQ: I like characters in general, and with IG I tend bring a lot of Company Commanders.

Troops: I enjoy IG infantry armies, and that means a lot of troops.

Least Favourite:

Fliers/Superheavies/LoW: I'm still of the belief that these things belong in Apocalypse, not in standard games. Also, whilst not as bad as they were in 7th, I find them incredibly boring to play against.

For my Sisters.

Favorite: Fast Attack. I love a Seraphim squad to run with Celestine. Though I field mostly Dominion squads. Real stars of the Index.

Least: Troops. They were always the mainstay of my lists for nearly two decades, but now they don't compare to Dominions and I would rather put the non Dominion points into Retributors, PenEngines and Repentia.

A ton of armies and a terrain habit...

There are just so many interesting choices in the HS section usually, while Flyers always felt like something duct taped on to the system.

One of the ideas I really wanted to see in 8th was the elimination of the Force Organization slots. For all practical purposes, it's gone now, but they continue to pay lip service to it. It's an artificial structure with no real bearing placed onto the design of the game. Indeed, many players look at it like a "tax"- you must bring an HQ and two troops for every army. When formations were added, it just made the situation even worse. While the formations are now gone (thank you GW!), but they are basically back, albeit without all the brokeness of the old formations. So far. I have a feeling we will see them again.

I kinda wish they'd import the old Fantasy/current AoS structure where it's more organized into broad rarity categories rather than battlefield role, and limit accordingly.

I just voted the inverse I love troops. Those lowly grunts are my all favourite part of any army I made. In the other hand I never use flyers, I don't like them. The same goes for LoW's

But to be honest in general I don't like vehicles. To me they are ultra boring. I love how every single model in your squad of infantry can have their own personality, you can convert them to make them individuals. Vehicles? Yes, you can convert them, paint them different, etc... but at the end of the day they don't offer me as building joy as making grunts.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I voted HQ, Troops and Elites for my favourite. I love a leader I can rally behind, or a figurehead to lead my troops. I really like my infantry, even if they're expendable or a bit worthless. I never take a Marine list without at least 3 Tactical Squads. Elites is where some of the most fun stuff is - Terminators, Sternguard (beautiful kit), Command Squads, Scions (in 7th), Crisis and Stealth Suits. A bodyguard or lynchpin unit for my list usually comes from my Elites slot.

Least favourite - Fast Attack. I've always been a bit underwhelmed by my fast attack choices. I rarely have actually needed speed in my list, and if I do, I take transports. Guardsmen have quite underwhelming FA choices, not over keen on Sentinels or Hellhounds. Space Marine choices are slightly better, but not by much. Bikes aren't really my thing.

I'd have to say Elite is my favorite. You can do all sorts of cool tricks with Imperial Elites. So, I like to bring lots of them and I usually have to stop and figure out how to arrange them when I'm building a list.

My least favorite thing is Fast Attack, hands down. I don't even own any and I dread the day when I might decide that: "Yeah, I really need to go Brigade." Either I'll get cheap sentinels that only work as chaff or more expensive Hellhounds that actually manage to kill stuff.

Man, why can't Guard have jetpack-troopers as Fast Attack? You know, just a regular old Infantry Squad (w/2 Specials instead of Special and Heavy) but with jump packs and deep strike and they'd be like 7-8 points per model. You could use them to jump objectives and harass flanks. Plus jetpacks are instant cool. This one's free, GW.

I'm in the same boat, except that Sentinels are the only FA choice I own for the guard.

Which gets really annoying if I want to play infantry guard.

Exactly. I mean, we've already got Scions - could some of them not have jetpacks rather than just . . . er . . . whatever the hell is is they use to deep strike?

It would also be nice if we could get a Jetpack HQ to go with them.

Favourite is Elites. I've had Blood Angels since starting 40k and they have so many fun choices, and there are few armies that don't have a decent amount of elites choices to fill a bunch of roles. I suppose my second choice for this, even though I didn't vote for it, would be HQ. I'm still quite in the 2nd edition mindset as far as army composition so a quarter of my army being characters doesn't seem off to me.

Similarly, flyers and Lords Of War are my least favourite. I just don't have the time or money to sink into them and seeing that many points used up by a single huge model hurts me.

Take a look at what I've been painting and modelling: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/725222.page

Favorite: Heavy support. Tanks and heavy infantry have always been the backbone of any force I field, to the point I usually run a spearhead detachment for the extra slots. LoW is a close second, but you can't really bring that kind of stuff every game, otherwise people start complaining.

Least favorite: fast attack. I play marines, but I've never had much use for the FA units, with the possible exception of bike squads, which I'm currently experimenting with.
