I have some resin bases that i wanna be able to stick flyer stems into.

Anyone know the best tool I could/should use to go about getting a hole big enough, and could pick up from the hardware store?

I only just realized my pin vice isn't wide enough. Is it just a matter of getting a larger pin vice, or would you suggest something better?

Are the flyer stems transparent? If not, I'd consider drilling and pinning the stem itself to the base.

Yeah, should've specified - they're the transparent ones.

Have you checked the extra collet? It might be large enough to fit a larger drill bit (the bit you can just buy from a hardware store). Usually the extra collet is stored in the back of the handle.

In the past I’ve drilled a hole with the largest bit my pinvice can take, then used a larger bit by hand to widen it. Not optimal, but easier then breaking out my power drill.

Go to your local R/C store and pick up a body reamer, that is how i have always made holes in based for models that had pegs to insert into bases.

Am I missing something obvious here? A drill?

The problem is that most of the drill/pin vices that we use for minis can only hold bits up to about 3mm. Give or take a little depending on your brand/model. So what do you use when you want a larger hole drilled?

Do you have a cordless screwdriver at all?
That'll do the job nicely.

Although as Nevelon said I usually end up using my pin drill then widening by hand, because the screwdriver is usually in the garage and I don't like spiders...

GW flyer stems are just under 3mm. I'm sure I've used a drill big enough to make a hole for a GW flyer stem with my pin vise.

Unless we're talking about some other type of flyer stem.

That's why I said make sure you've checked the 2nd collet, pin vises usually come with 2 collets each with 2 heads, so 4 sizes. I never knew my pin vise came with a 2nd collet until I was fiddling around one day and removed the handle to find the 2nd one

Thanks for the good leads, guys!

I'll check the 2nd collet, and if that doesn't work out, a body reamer actually sounds like an easy solution.

I use a lot of 1/8" magnets so I found a pin vice that can hold that size bit.

I use it for mounting the flight stems. Its slightly bigger then the lower portion of the peg, but works fine.
