How do?

Been thinking about my lovely Niddlydidlies, and how I want to play them.

I’m going shooty, signing up to Kronos as my Hive Fleet (looks a doddle to paint too).

And with that in mind, and indeed just generally, is there really any reason not to take Devourers on Termagants these days? Sure it’s a significantly higher points investment. But for that, you get triple the firepower, and vitally, a longer range (18” compared to 12”). And in 8th Ed of course, I can split that firepower up when declaring targets. And it’s that last thing I think has really tipped the balance.

Of course, the platform is no more durable, so it’s not a wonder fix for anything. But unless I’m missing something, that’s really about it in terms of downside. Keep them in Synapse range, and broods of 30 should prove a real problem. I think.

Any input?

Without a good delivery method to get all 30 in range quickly the enemy will rip into them knowing the threat they pose. Being termagants they will die quickly and that 8 points per model will rack up quickly.

I would almost always go 10 dev 20 flesh or 15/15 until I got access to Jorm where I can bring all 30 with a group of raveners. Now its 30 dev for sure.

With you going kronos you should consider how your going to get your expensive fragile gants into range.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Was mostly gonna wait for the foe to come to me.

Hive Fleet Kronos gets decent shooting bonuses for staying still.

Plus, an 18" bubble isn't too hard to get into range.

May not want broods of 30 on reflection though. Perhaps 6 of 15, spread them and their threat bubble out a bit Whack in some Venomthropes to give them farty cloud protect.

The way I see it if you're gonna take unaugmented Gaunts, you're better off taking Hormas because they'll do the tarpit job better and that's really the main thing you want them for.

One idea might be 20 devilgaunts and 10 Fleshborers: Being in a large unit gives them the buff, but the wounds they lose to start with are cheaper throwaway wounds..

With the Shooting of this game, they will just die, if you want to have some and keep them alive, take a Tervigon with 30 Gants, and 10 of those gants are Devourers, when they are shot and killed take away the Fleshborer ones and replace them each turn.

1) The tervigon is not worth it, IMO

2) Termagants are better in broods of 30

3) Mix in some fleshborers. Try out different ratios between fleshborers and devourers, and find out what works for you.

4) Kronos is an odd choice for a termagant based army. Termagants needs to close with the enemy. Kronos wants them to be stationary.

Wait wait wait.....

I don’t have to upgrade the entire unit?

In the index you could mix. There is no word of that having changed.

Imho the best hive fleet for dev gaunts is jormuwhatever. Being able to be tunneled close to the enemy and having 100% more armor is irreplaceable.

Hmmm.... might be the best solution, mixing the units up.

Gives me the firepower I want, and some meatshields to preserve said firepower for a bit.

Not at all worried about them being blown to kingdom come. All about providing enough of a threat to worry and distract enemy infantry. And potentially pot the odd damaged tank if push come to shove.

Because with sheer volume, you can do anything these days!

Plus, part of the plan is to have enough bodies on the board to present my opponent with difficult target priority.

Will it work? Well, I’ll have fun finding out!
