I am about to complete a "kit bashed" Malanthrope and I was looking for an efficient way make good looking tentacles with green stuff.

On the net I saw a couple of very inspirational pictures of kit-bashed malanthropes but it has to be done with some sort of tools!

http://monkeychuka.blogspot.ca/2014/08/malanthrope-conversion.html

Is their any other tricks that might be cheaper than the tentacle tool kit?

Guitar string is the only other thing I can think of, I'd get two or 3 different thicknesses. Hope this helps.
Anywhere I can see your work in progress?, doing a tyranidish army myself, may eventually need to move to a project like this, wouldn't mind inspiration

From Endor to Hoth, Ripley to Spock, I'll get what you want but there's Gunna be a cost

I've seen tentacle making machines before, I think Green Stuff World might sell one.

Edit:

Check it out, it appears to make rolls just like you want:

I could show you an image or two once I finish the first few steps. As we speak all I have is a table full of bits and tons of green stuff!
That being said far from me the idea to "astonish" the web community!

I got the one from Green Stuff World as well and it's really easy to use and really handy for making both wires and tentacles!

Dude your in luck. I am a novice scupltor. I just did 3x malanthropes.

No need to buy the tentacle maker, i looked at it, but decided against it. I used the same blog as reference as well.

use a COMB. Roll the greenstuff into a tube. To get the tappered point roll your finger down toward one side a few times until it gets smaller.

Then take your come, lots of water, also water the surface under the tentacle really well. Like a lot, you should see a small puddle of water under the greenstuff. Now roll your comb along the tentalce and gently press.

You may squish it the first time or too. Just reroll the tentacle back to smooth and try again. It took me about 3 tries until i got the feel for it.

You can use fine tooth spacing for smaller tentacle, the wider tooth spacing for the big ones. Sometimes I did it where i used both so that the small fine tooth spacing is at the pointy end.

Enough talk. here is my thread with pics.

EDIT: try you tube vids. Not a lot of Tyranids stuff, but you can find it. A lot of nurgle stuff actually works for Nids as well. Check those out.
