Death Guard were my mainstay army in 5th, but, well, everything's changed as of late. My bolter and chainsword Plague Marines don't work anymore. OTOH, new Death Guard Models and lots of new units for Death Guard - so why not restart?

Easy to Build Plague Marines. Since these miniatures are so darn ornate, I wanted to keep the painting simple as possible. So it's a basecoat (Terracotta, Brass and Flesh of various tones) for the most part - a bit of chain mail here and there, followed by a wash of Agrax Earthshade then a wash of Druchii Violet. Paints were carefully chosen to work with those colors. Afterwards, some minor highlights and details (bone growths, etc).

Dark Imperium Death Guard with obligatory plasma weaponry. Plasma guns stolen from 30K MkIV marines work just fine.

And more Dark Imperium troopers.

One trouble I ran into is how spiky these minis are. Even with priming, paint was repeatedly rubbing off points through simple handling - very, very annoying. These models have so many pointy bits! My second set of DI Death Guard will have many pointy parts removed - in part to reduce this problem, in part to make them look different. These guys took way longer than I thought they would, what with all the fiddly bits, I'm actually quite surprised GW put them in a 'starter' kit like Dark Imperium, they're really not for beginners (though the overall theme of Death Guard can absolve a lot of painting mistakes).
