The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Damn it man, I need this book now, as I love reading about this all.
And for those wondering, Unbound is a top site for this sort of thing.

"It's the rain, drumming onto the top of their van, as if a huge Ogre right out of a D&D game was using their roof as a drum-kit (Drums of Thunder, +6)." is terrible prose and makes me not want to read this at all.

That whole extract is circular and horrible. I'm interested in the story but this style isn't good.

Sounds like it could be an interesting book, but I'd be much more interested in reading about the rise and fall of Kirby or the catastrophic misinterpretation of the LOTR bubble.

Just a quick warning for those interested: a few days ago I got an email warning it reached 60% funding. Slowly but steady. I'm hoping to pledge in a few days too.

It's cringe-inducing "geek humor" that a competent editor should have had excised from the manuscript at an early stage.

Yeah, way too conversational (and lame) a tone for something they're selling as a fancy history book.

We have great news! Dice Men: Games Workshop 1975 to 1985 has been funded. And it wouldn’t have been possible without your support – thank you!
We’ll let you know when we receive the manuscript from the author, and keep you in the loop as it makes its way through the publishing process.
Share the good news! There’s still time on the clock for your friends to have their names printed in the back, too.

Oh my gosh, I'd forgotten this project was announced all those years ago. Someone mentioned it to me this week, so I started reading this thread as if it was fresh news, so the discovery of a comment I have no memory of writing was a strange one.

I got my copy a few days ago. I've read most of it, but haven't finished it yet.
Paper, printing and binding quality is very nice. Many nice photographs and illustrations, though there are a small number of scanning errors and compression artifacts on a few.
The writing itself provides an interesting look at GW's early history. There were many assumptions that I had that turned out to be wrong, which was instructive. The way the material is organized was a bit confusing, as I expected it to be chronological but it keeps jumping around by topic instead, which is a bit confusing.
Heavy emphasis on Ian Livingstone's career; Warhammer only gets a couple of chapters, so if you're only in it for the Warhams, this probably isn't for you.

Very much a history of Games Workshop rather than Citadel Miniatures.

Just to add to the discussion, has anyone heard of the upcoming book Grimdark-A Very British Hell.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/190722209X/
On Warhammer 40,000, Britain's most excessive sci-fi franchise, and its vision of a hellish postindustrial future.
In the grim darkness of the British imagination, there is only Warhammer 40,000…. Featuring demons, chain swords, and supermen in power armor, Warhammer 40,000 is Britain's most excessive sci-fi franchise. For thirty years this cult war game and its tie-in media have enticed thousands of fans to build, paint, and play with armies of toy soldiers taken from the battlefields of the worst possible future. Why has this fantasy proven so irresistible? Part collection of essays, part ravings of a cult prophet, Grimdark examines Warhammer 40,000's place and impact in pop culture, and how this unique vision of a hellish future arose from the subconscious of postindustrial Britain.
Due out in the US in May.
