So i was browsing the AM codex and say that Slab Shields just add 2 to the armour save. I think that's really cool and way better than having invuln save on like almost everything it seems.

But would it be OP?

Marines of any kind would be immune to all ap- weapons.
Terminators with storm shields would pretty much have a field day running around.

Personally I think this mechanic should be used on more than just the slab shield and more than just the storm shield as well. I also don't think invulns should be removed, both have their place

So you're saying that, if you have a 1+ save, you should be immune to anything without an AP value?

I have Nurgle Daemons. There are three units with an AP value in that army. Three. And only one is actually Nurgle-the other two are generic.

Okay. Here's a follow up question.

How would you deal with a bullgryn who has a 4+ save, +2 from a slab shield and +1 for being in cover?

He has a +1 save

Lots of attacks.

Just to be clear, here's my question:

Do you think that 1+ Saves should autopass?

No, I'm in the boat of 6s always hit and 1 always fail.

I'm mainly bringing this up as I think it's a pretty cool alternative to having invuln saves everywhere.

Okay. Because this:

Made me think you were suggesting a 1+ save be auto passing.

No, I'd be totally fine with allowing for 1+ and 0+ saves. That being said, they should be RARE. A Marine should not just get a Slab Shield, thus giving them a 2+ against even AP-1 weapons (AP-2 if they're in cover).

Just to be clear. The rules as they are NOW...

1s always fail

6s do not always succeed.

Okay I worded that poorly I'll admit lol

30K has marine models with breacher shields, so I’m fine with the idea of marines being able to buy some form of shield and it adding to their armor save. However, doing the same with Terminators (who are already 2+), seems a bit of a waste.

What if, for every point that would make the armor save better than 2+, it converts over to invulnerable? That would mean that Storm shields should work the same for Terminators, but if you gave them to Tactical marines, their armor save would become 2+ instead of 4+/5++.

It never ends well

Dunno how i feel about it.

Is adding to the armor save better than an invul that caps out the armor save?

it feels like it ultimately hurts normal shooting stuff and kinda forces you to take heavy ap weapons.

assuming SS's become that popular again.

Or it could be something as simple as "A Marine with a Slab Shield counts Ap-1 weapons as Ap0". Resistant to only the medium-power weapons like Heavy Bolters and Gauss.

I've implemented "Invulnerable saves" in another project based on the 40k dice mechanics as "ignore the first X points of AP", I haven't tested it extensively enough to comment on how well it works but it could be a route to take.

I always though shields should add a parry instead of increasing armor.

Example:

A model equipped with a slab shield counts as being in cover and any time they roll a 6 on their armor save roll they can autopass one failed save.

I find it hard to swallow that even a slab shield can stop a Demolisher cannon shell by swatting it aside or bracing for the impact on the shield.

(Personally, I just want Licheguard to get their reflective shield properties back - I think there’s two other models in the game that gained those abilities in 8th).

Goku does this with his bare hands. I think forcefielded slab of ceramite should allow this.

Unless I am mistaken, and I am fairly sure I am not, slab shields do not have force fields, they are just big slabs of ceramite, hence the name.
Also WtF does Goku have to do with 40k and when has anybody ever fire a demolisher cannon at him?

The other thing I didn't mention is that the points cost for a slab shield using my rules would only be 2-3points. Making it more affordable to field units full of them.

Imagine being able to stick them on a 10man basic primaris squad.
