So which one is correct? 20x70 or 42x 72.

Rules wise? Whatever base the original kit came with is correct I believe.

Bikers come with the smaller ones. Black knights come with the larger. I like uniformity. So want to move one way or the other

Yes. More clearly, there's nothing in the rules about which base a model should be on. Even of you want to stick to "the bases the original kit came with", that leaves you the choice of 25x50 rectangles, 25x75 "pills"*, or 75x42 ovals. Or none at all, which is how my bikes were supplied. Pick one of those. Or put them on 60x35 bases, if you want; they should fit on those too.

*I think that's what you're referring to as "20 x 70"? The ones that the Space Marine Bike Squad is depicted on in the online store? The Ravenwing Command Squad (which is the same kit as the Black Knights) is also shown on those bases on the website.

Bah, you should do like us grognards and try to shoehorn them onto a cavalry rectangle.

I personally prefer the bigger oval bases myself over the pill bases. It doesn't really matter what kind of bases you put your minis on as long as they are reasonable. And iirc the benefits/downsides to different base sizes in 40k comes out to a wash.

The ovals look better than the pills, you have room for a little basing, and you get less overhang from arms and weapons. If all my bikers weren’t already on custom pill bases I’d switch in a heartbeat.

They’re both valid ruleswise, if you have the option I’d go ovals.
