I was considering getting some Thousand Sons and painting them in the pre-heresy metallic red scheme. I'm looking to get the Citadel Artificer Tint Set and was wandering which metallic to mix with the red tint to get a good red; gold or silver? I know gold is already browner than silver, so it would probably turn red a lot quicker, but would it make a good red? Or would silver make a nicer red in the end? This is probably a stupid question, but I've never used them before so I wanted to make sure.
If you guys had any pictures for examples, that'd be awesome.

Thanks in advance

Gold with red looks good. Reaper used to make metallic color paint like red, blue, green etc...may be worth looking into.

So for me personally, when I am doing the candy coat red on my custode's shoulder pads I do a gw gold progression

Base retributor, wash the recesses heavy with agrax or nuln, then towards the middle part I do auric gold and finally where the sun would be hitting I do liberator gold. I then cover it with angron red clear paint from forge world (brush for small stuff and airbrush for larger areas)

I like gold under a clear red, it gives a really great depth.

Gunze metallic red...

Works good. I don't have a pic because I bought mine to make metallic purple, so I poured metallic blue in to my pot of metallic red.

These guys were painting with the metallic blue from the same range, with the purple areas being the aforementioned metallic red + metallic blue mix.

I then hit it with the appropriate blue and purple washes (GW brand if I recall) and because those washes are matte I used a gloss varnish to bring back the shine, but I sort of kind of drybrushed the gloss on (not a very dry brush, just dry enough so that it didn't settle in to the crevices so that the crevices remained matte).

I currently have no use for metallic red at all but the above techniques come out looking so good I want to paint it!

I like using Vallejo Metallic Medium - you can turn any of your paints into a metallic with this which proves invaluable.

If I had to be pinned down to a specific range, the scale 75 ruby or garnet Alchemy paints - the whole scale 75 metallic line is truly excellent.

We’re introducing a big range of metallics in all sorts of different colours at INSTAR, currently we only have blue as our non-standard metallic colour but we plan to add more to the range soon ranging from greens, yellows, oranges, reds and a few more.

found with my Thousand Sons that a silver base, starting metallic black and working to chrome, then Tamiya Clear red went well.

Gold I've used for some chaos models, its warmer but you get a much browner red, the silver is more the candy colour.

Guess as with everything, test it, find some spare unused weapon arms or similar and paint one in each - but then paint the weapon as well to see what it looks like with the other colours you will be using

@ Ulfhednar - That looks fantastic! Now I'm looking at my Blood Angels and wondering how much effort it would be to strip them all...

Thanks everyone for the replies, all those models shown look great, in particular Ulfhednar's Skullcrushers. The deliciousness is over 9000. So I think I'll rock your technique, I can see them looking snazzy in that colour.

Thanks everyone!
