Subject: What is the reason to have more than one melee weapon?
|

Hi, just received my tyranid warriors box.. I'm wondering what weapons give to them (1 prime and 2 warriors). I want them to be strong in melee, but if i give them, let's say, boneswords or boneswords and lash whip, i don't see any reason to give them scything talons or rending claws.
I mean, reroll 1 can be useful, also ap - 4 if i roll 6+, but is it useful to use 2/3 attacks with one weapon and the others with other weapon? Or maybe is better give them deathspitter?
I'm new to warhammer so maybe I can't see all the things involved...
Thank you!

None really. I mean you can go with Scything Talons for those occaisions where your opponent has a better invuln than armour save as the re roll 1's trumps AP but most of the time there would be no point.

It depends on what unit it is and which weapons.
Some times a weapon will give you extra attacks if you allocate into it
some times one is a very good anti horde weapon that spills over damage or one that is very good against some high T thing.
but in general for mooks no reason.

Sometimes you have units with different weapons for different situations (e.g. Knights have chainswords/fists for punching out big things with S16 attacks dealing 6 damage or whatever, but they've also got feet attacks that make three attacks per attack for clearing chaff), but with Tyranid Warriors' melee options that isn't really a consideration. I don't know the points cost since I don't have the Codex in front of me but from the stats in the Index I'd say Boneswords are your best melee option since it gets you the extra attack with just one pair of arms (leaving the other open for a gun) and AP-2 on all your attacks is going to do more for you than rerolling 1s to hit or the critical-AP effect.

Ok.. Everything's clear.. I'll definitely go for boneswords and deathspitter for the 2 warriors and lash whip + bonesword and deathspitter for the prime..
The warriors join my 2 (bought used) warriors with deathspitter + scything talons and venom cannon + scything talons
You confirmed my suspect that there was no very good reason for give in this case only melee weapons..
Thanks so much!

Also, just a suggestion. If you want melee warriors you should build shrikes.
Shrikes for 6 more PPM get +6 M and the FLY keyword. They are way better melee warriors then warriors themselves.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Melee warriors on foot can definitely work with glands, swords and Kraken or Leviathan, or Jormungandr deep-strike. And six points extra is a pretty significant difference.
One thing I will say though: Warriors should be either melee or have deathspitters. If you are going to shoot, you are not going to advance, and then Adrenal Glands is a waste, and swords probably too. On the other hand, if you will be advancing and charging into combat, then don't spend points on the death-spitter. The most important part about warriors is to keep them cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions! At the moment, everything i have cost to me 1200pt more or less, so for now the excessive cost doesn't bother me too much (the warriors i bought used has adrenal glands and toxin sacs so i gave also to the new one, not to the prime anyway).
I try them in this way and let's see what happens

Nobody you play will know what the dangling sacs or weird bulging brain things do anyway, so don’t feel like you have to always run them with toxin sacs and adrenal glands.
Some units, like Genestealers, can benefit from two weapon types. Their normal claws handle most enemies but the Talons work better against things like daemons with just invulns and no armor. Warriors are better off with a mix of shooty/choppy.
