I recently got a pack of Terminators, and assembled one of them with what looks to be just a tentacle in the melee slot. What is this? Did I make a pretty bad mistake?

It’s a mutation to be added for fluff purposes. It has no in game use. Technically there’s no such thing as WYSIWYG anymore so you could just say it was any melee weapon that terminators have access to, but some players and tournaments are really anal about that kind of thing and want you to model every single detail about the model’s war gear.

Personally, I just think it looks stupid so I never put one on.

Also, if you want lightning claws for your terminators, warp talons are the best choice. They are actually scaled really well and look better on the terminators than the loyalist ones which look like gorilla arms IMO.

There's a local game store that does WYSIWYG. I don't play there. To me, it's just an ultra restrictive way to squeeze cash out of players. 90% of the time all my terminators have the same weapon anyways, so it doesn't exactly even matter.

The CHaos Terminator box is.... pretty junk.

I think you get 2 power fists, 2 power axes and a chainfist? As well as 3 combi bolters, a combi flamer and the auto-cannon. The Tentacle is purely a cool looking thing.

I bought the terminator box planning to run 5 fists & combi-bolters, i was super dissapointed.

To be fair, what box for Chaos (or most factions period) even comes with the proper ability to run everything? The marines box doesn't come with 5 of each special weapon, the havocs or demo box don't come with 5 of each heavy, etc.

The new 30K Horus Heresy sprues are a good example of what a sprue should come with, for both the MKIII / MKIV Power armour boxes and the Cataphractii / Taartos terminator boxes.

Granted the chaos box is horribly old but it's still garbage.

If I were to build another term squad I'd do it via bits. So I get exactly what I want.

On my old 7th edition DG terminators I used the tentacle as a lightning claw.

Man, I hate that tentacle. Way to screw him over, dark gods.

The Plastic Chaos Terminator box was hot garbage even when it came out. The default loadout for each terminator was suppose to be a combi bolter and power weapon, but because they had a minimum unit size of 3, 2 of them don't have this. Compared to the loyalist one (which came out EARLIER) where every terminator option of the time was represented (technically it's split into two boxes, but in the assault terminator box every terminator had their choice of claws or hammer, while the normal terms had every single heavy weapon AND a choice of sword or fist for the fifth one, to make a sergeant or a 5th filler terminator).

As an aside, I find it curious when I come across a Chaos squad with identical loadout. Doesn't seem to fit "my" impression of the word chaos, let alone any fluff. Just my 2c

I use my tentacle with the reaper autocannon since the heavy weapon has a power sword esc bayonet to keep it wysiwyg enough. When building a chaos army i got 3 boxes of bikes, 3 raptors, 2 terminators and swapped the weapons around. Turning heavy flamers into combi flamers by cutting off a flame muzzle and replacing it with half a bolt pistol, or turning combi-bolters into combi-plasma by cutting off a bolter muzzzle and replacing with half a plasma pistol. Heck one of my 2 combi-bolter bikes has a pair of arms with bolt pistols growing out of the front for a close counts as, Moral is chaos kits are way too scarce for bits within themselves but some are vary ripe for conversion. Like the demon prince with 4 arms and 2 heads growing out of my renegade knight.

In 3rd edition the tentacle was an upgrade that counted as powerweapon. I'd still treat it that way as an axe. No opponent should blame you.

Ive just come back to 40k so I'm interested to hear about the removal of WYSIWYG. How has that been working out? I'm in favor of it but I would not have expected that to be removed.

I actually like the Chaos Terminator box... those rhino heads? My favourite Terminator helmets of all time.
I have one unoppened, waiting for when I build my chaos force.

I'll note that every single one of my Aspiring Champions (for CSM, Chosen, Havocs, Terminators, Bikers, Raptors, Warp Talons, Berzerkers, and Noise Marines) and all of my HQ models (Lords, Exalted Champions, Sorcerers, and Dark Apostles) have tentacles and other mutations (most from the Possessed kits) for one of their arms.

Not only does this reflect the fluff of my army (where two brother sorcerers are experimenting on mutation in order to turn themselves into Daemon Princes), but I also can call each of them any melee weapon I want. Particularly helpful come change of edition time, when every option gets turned on its head on the usefulness front.

No one has complained, and if they did they would be a tool. And I'd tell them that. Right to their smelly faces.

I assume the rule was removed as part of GW attempt to make their games more accessible for new players.

Don't have the specific gun for this single guy in your squad? no problem, bring what you like. etc.

I don't really have a problem with no WYSIWYG, but I do find it annoying if someone shows up and their entire army is not what it should be.

I mean, I convert all of my armies. But I spend a lot of time buying up models to convert and modelling them appropriately so that everyone knows what they are representing on the board. I don't take short cuts with anything really, so it kind of bums me out when another player just throws some gak together on the board. like have some pride in your work.

That being said, I've never really had a problem with any conversions, even in tournaments. But that's usually because I put time into them and I don't try model for advantage.

And If they do have a problem, feth em. I don't have time for people like that.

Fluffwise, chaos marines are able to recover from terrible injury thanks to mutation reknitting their flesh, so don't think of it as a downgrade to a powerfist, think of it as an upgrade to a missing arm
