Lol jokes aside, me and a friend (the latter of whom REALLY likes Ogryns and thinks they're cute) wondered if it's possible to field an all-ogryn army. Vanguard Detachment should be able to fulfill the minimum requirements but we're at a loss for what to pick as a HQ. I personally kinda wanna keep the big monster theme going (and staying within the IG list) while she's more flexible if the leader could buff the ogryns in some way. So, suggestions?

Unfortunately, the closest things to Ogryn leaders are the Bodyguards, but they're also Elite choices.

Maybe use a Ogre Warlord as the base for a Guliman conversion?

It's "fluffy" for a Commissar to lead auxiliaries such as Ogryn.

I believe the Lord Commissar is an HQ unit?

Check out the picture with the structure. It says under Militarum Auxillas... "3 Ogryn Squads under Commissar Raven". That's pretty much a vanguard detatchment, I believe?

Ogryn dont get regiment tactics anyway, so you should use a Custodes Vexilla, who grants ogryns a 5++ save...which becomes a 3++ save for Bullgryns with slabshields.

Hows that for a buff.

If you're only going to play casually with people you know, you could houserule Nork to be an HQ instead of an Elite. I wouldn't mind someone playing that if they were trying to field a nice ogryn army.

This is an excellent option, in my opinion.

Unfortunately my friend is more competitively-minded so we'd like these lists to be battleforged. Otherwise i'd just go whole hog and run ogryns.

EDIT: Competitively-minded doesn't necessarily mean she min-maxes stuff, she just likes following what is legal in a tournament setting. And I do too to avoid arguments on pickup games).

Use a Leman Russ Commander, but make it a Ogryn Heavy-Weapon Squad (So one Ogryn with a giant cannon on a tripod, or two Ogryns manning a giant cannon on a tripod and one Fancy Ogryn with a Fancy hat yelling orders at them. Just use a square base that is the appropiate size as a Leman Russ footprint).
She can call him Gazston.

There's an idea. ALthough wouldn't that make the unit more of a support unit rather than a leader?

Or should I do that and run a Ogryn Bodyguard as my actual leader and play the tank commander as a support unit?

Well, some other possibilities:

- A Tempestor Prime. Not an Ogryn, but would fit in with Bullgryns.

- A Primaris Psyker. Fluff it that he's using his mental powers to direct all the Ogryns (bonus points for modelling them with 'brainwave-enhancing helmets').

- A Tank Commander. Model it with an Ogryn partially out of the hatch. Bonus points for making the hatch slightly too small, so that it looks like the guy has gotten stuck.

- A SM or SW HQ in terminator armour with a Storm Shield. Model it as a Bullgryn.

Has the community reach a consensus about the FAQ that says that you can't start a battle with less than 0 CP? One can take two meanings from it: That if you start with -10 CP you start with 0, or that if your army list has less than 0 CP is not a legal army.

Use a Tank Commander, but model it with half an Ogryn sticking out of the top, possibly even comically. It will fit the theme and still adhere to a strict battleforged ruleset. You could then mimic this for a squad of russes to make your ogryn army more robust and competitive.

It's worth noting that ogryn are famously claustrophobic, but if the guard can muster up whole regiments from ogryn worlds I don't see why you can't mod the vehicles to make them appear 'ogryn-proofed'.

An ogryn driving a scout sentinel would be an interesting sight for sure.

Actually how appropriate would it be if I used a dreadnought profile (specifically the chaplain dread) for the lead ogryn and have him basically be walking around with pieces of a leman russ bolted to him? (THis would be based off of the AoS Bullgor model, so it's significantly bigger).

That would work thematically, but the buff wouldn't carry over to the ogryns in game as it only affects astartes.

Using Roboute G. as the HQ would work. but youd have to take a supreme command detachment and still need 2 more HQ's.

Taking a tank commander modified to look like an 4 ogryns would work in the vangaurd detachment. Imagine having 2 ogryns pedeling some threads like bikes, one guy aiming the cannon, and another sitting up top with a commisar hat and waving a sword.

....I just realized I can convert a Frostlord on Stonehorn/Thundertusk into a Ogryn Bone'ead riding on a giant warbeast with the weapons mounted on the beast or have the ogryn holding it.

Let the Ogryns be Nobz with Kustom shootas and the Bullgryn be Meganobz with twin killsaws. Nominate a particularly vicious looking Ogryn to be your Warboss. Ghazkgull for example.

Then you have a legal army of Orks proxied by Ogryns models. And it is going to wreck face if you can get them across the board. If.
