Oh that isn't so bad then.

Why do you have sand or snow flooring though?

Because that was about all I had at the time. It was either that or wood, and I didn't want to risk my home burning down. I don't have this problem in the more recent world where I spawned in a forest biome which I accidently burned down...

I suppose it is just another thing we will have to get used to, if you don't want mobs spawning in your house don't have a sand or snow floor.

It was probably the sand rather than the snow. I know mobs spawn on sand, as they spawn in desert biomes.

Mysterious noises are your friends. They let you know there is an undiscovered cave somewhere, which usually have a decent amount of resources in.

That video.
The fun of a zombie being in a cave nearby and how awesome the feather is.

I kind of hoped he'd find a Creeper the entire time though.

Not sure on the Alpha version.

Same as the Beta with less stuff. Spiders couldn't climb, sugarcane used to be reeds.

i dont know about you guys but im using a free beta. i went on youtube and searched for free minecraft beta. it has a video of a guy showing you what to do, you go to a download site and download the beta and open it. where it asks about entering a password you leave it blank and it works fine. you can also update the software too. im currently running beta 1.3.

I'm not sold on the whole noises = caves thing. I've heard plenty of noises while mining and found jack and squat. Meanwhile the few caves I have found while mining were almost never presaged by creepy noises.

Mind you, I do the optimal mining thing so when I'm digging unless that cave is exactly 1 cubic meter in size I'd find it.

Walk over an area that doesn't make the sound. Then dig out a cavity, cover the top and walk around it for a bit maybe leaving it for a while.

I'm not saying it's exact it just seems to be sort of a hint function. I find it annoying when I get lazy and dig out a huge area with explosives only to find that when I've finished building it now makes the sounds so I have to dig out a section and fill it in again.

@Deathklaat: That's piracy by the way. Exploiting the built in offline feature.

Unless it's twenty five layers above or below where you're digging?

If its that far away the hints worthless. You're talking about a cave being somewhere in an over 50,000 m^3 volume.

Let's see...

Ambient sounds require that a space at least 3×3×3, entirely at light level zero, be positioned ten to twenty blocks away from the player in any direction.

I wanna get the game now. I've decided, that the intricate detail of the game actually does appeal quite a bit. Now to wait 2 months until I have the dosh to buy it. /sob

so i thought i would casually expand my underground domain and connect my 2 smallish shelters and while i was knocking holes in the wall i discovered a pretty vast cave system under my house.

so i went exploring, and there was much running and dying and explosions. i eventually started walling sections up because i was getting lost too often.

i have started to turn my mound of dirt that i call a shelter into something a bit more distiguishable from my surroundings. i have started to build a spire off of the side of the cliff, i would like to build it large enough that i could use it to find my base when i go exploring. what are some good ways to light a structure for a beginner?

At the moment, sugar cane has two uses. To make sugar, used in making cakes (a healing item), and to make paper, used for making books, used for making bookcases.

omg. Enough! my fragile mind can't take anymore.

It keeps them from spawning. Some monsters get hurt from direct sunlight though. Zombies and skeletons I mean. Spiders turn neutral in direct sunlight and creepers are god's gift to hatred no matter what time of day.

Yay my simplest passive mob trap ever, a buring netherack that mobs kill themselfes on, 1 large chest of pork very quickly!

Specifically mobs need the ambient light level at the tile they spawn at to be below seven. Torches emit light level 14 and that is reduced by one for each meter away from it you are. So the idea with torch placement in areas you want no monsters to spawn is to keep the torches close enough to raise the light level to at least seven or more. Now mind you this is only on flat ground where the mobs can spawn. Doesn't matter if a wall is pitch black so long as the ground at the bottom of it is at seven or more.

When I'm mining that means I put a torch on the wall ever 15 or so meters. This keeps the light level at about nine or ten minimum so no mobs ever spawn in my mines. Same above ground though in my big open areas its less a regular pattern and more just throwing a ton of them everywhere.

ok a silly question but after watching some youtube vids and seeing everyone's pictures... how do you increase your view distance? i have mine set to far but i really do not see that far. perhaps im just in a low elevation area?

Ugh, I think the fog distance hot key is F. If not you can always go into options and it'll have view distance as one of the options.

I haven't had a creeper blow up anything important in a while but they have blown more than a few craters in my lawn. donkey-caves.

ok another noobish question. all this talk of creeper farming and such.. is there a guide somewhere how to make these?

does it use the games natural creeper spawning or does it require to find/invedit one?

Yep search mob farming on the minecraft wiki, there's a great effective farm there to build with good instructions to follow.

I want to go to an SMP server and lay a booby trap. Make a nice little base with lots of chests inside. Decent looking walls, etc. Put a sign up out from proclaiming it so and so's home and to stay out. There would be no door so they'd have to break through the walls. Once they were inside and went into the little house they'd step onto a pressure plate and set off about fifty m^3 of TNT. Maybe make the door require pushing a button to open but have nothing to open it from the inside.
