So I bought it this afternoon, as you do, after convincing myself it was a good purchase. I died on the first night after barricading myself inside a cave. Apparently having the creeps on the INSIDE doesn't increase your survivability, not one bit.

What are you talking about I invite creepers into my house all the time. They just have the odd tendency to try and make a door for their friends to come in.

Once they were inside and went into the little house they'd step onto a pressure plate and set off about fifty m^3 of TNT. Maybe make the door require pushing a button to open but have nothing to open it from the inside. Don't forget to build an observation tower or a hidden bunker nearby so you can watch the carnage unfold ghosty wrote:So I bought it this afternoon, as you do, after convincing myself it was a good purchase. well i got bored with map #3, there wasnt enough cool stuff around me.
map 4 however.. is AWESOME! i removed the fog and i see tons and tons of mountains, i climb the tallest i can find to claim it with my dirt hut. looking across i see an even taller mountain spire with an overhang! i have built a hut on that spire and i plan to make a glass house that hangs under the overhang.
also while in the overhang hut i notice the ground glowing in the distance and i spot a lava pool on the surface. i investigated it and i have a lava pool and a water pool about 5 blocks apart.
i have to say that building on these spires is great because the creepers cannot get to the top, but for some reason when im at one base they spawn at the other but never stick around when i get to the other one.
i got some really cool terrain this time i just need to make a ton of glass

However! Since the update all I get is "Minecraft has crashed" or a black screen when loading it up so I can't even get screenshots to share with dakka...

Speaking of creepers i just lost the front half of my re-spawn house...
They blow off the door to my wooden house on a regular basis. It's gotten to the point where they blow up and my character just rolls his eyes back and goes "oh you ".
I'll have pictures of the foundation of my new base up soon as well. I managed to make it a drag/lava guillotine trap with a backup layer. Digging the space for it was not fun, so I took some pictures of my TNT mining fun as well.

Nah, sandstone spawns in deserts and beneath beaches now.
You will need to make a new world if you want to see it though.

Right. Sandstone below sand. It's actually quite useful in helping to make a desert based shelter, as you can dig down to the sandstone, then go under it and have a sandstone roof and plenty of sand to make more sandstone to block the entrance.

C

where S is stick and C is coal.
You need to make light to stop monsters spawning.

Uh oh, by the sounds of things you've got a chunk error. These occur when old saves or worlds leech into each other. Keep an eye on it, you can sometimes get really cool looking terrain after a chunk error.
In hte past few days I've been expaning my underground realm again. I've now added a passive mob farm (which needs expansion) and a hostile mob spawning pit/grinder (which also needs expansion).
Getting a quite a few items out of the grinder but I'm also getting occasional spiders so it needs a bit of tweaking to stop them slipping through the net. Once those teething troubles are sorted I'll try to atleast double if not quadruple the size.

Attempt 2 at surviving the night. Again, it failed. I had this idea of building a really high pillar out of sand, to stop the nasty critters from getting to me. As it turned out a creeper blew it up, and I fell far to far to the ground, where I promptly got murdered.
And where can you get coal from?

Look in exposed mountain sides for rock with black spots in it. That's coal. Sometimes you will just be unlucky and not find any. If all else fails, dig down 3 blocks, jump into the hole and cover it up and wait out the night, nothing cam spawn where you're standing. Just keep an ear open to the sound of burning zombies/skellies and emerge after it stops.

If you used dirt you would have been fine as it doesn't fall.
You can manufacture coal by building a furnace (c is now cobblestone) like this
CCC
C C
CCC
then by placing fuel in the bottom one (anything wood) and some tree trunks in the top one.

Maybe you should just turn monsters off until you've better figured out how to play the game. It really isn't a hard game in the slightest. I picked it up after a couple hours. Here. Read through this - it might help you survive long enough to build your first house http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki As for coal, don't bother with it. Use charcoal. It's so close to the same quality that there's virtually no difference, and all you need to make it is a furnace, one of the following: a piece of coal, a log, a plank, or another piece of charcoal (as the fuel for the furnace), and unrefined logs from trees (just keep a stack of logs - doesn't matter what kind) Put the logs in the top slot on the furnace and put the fuel on the bottom. The fire symbol will light up, and the arrow will start to change from grey to white. Eventually, you'll see a chunk of charcoal appear in the small inventory of the furnace. Charcoal does the exact same thing as coal, without the hassle of trying to find it.
