Yep. After Episode IX is out, Rian Johnson will be delivering a trilogy.

As will the show runners of Game of Thrones. Confirmed by Disney themselves, praising their ability to tell compelling stories with large casts.

I'm trying to get you a link to the article, but work PC really doesn't like Denofgeek and keeps crashing when I try to read any articles.

But this is happening. Game of Thrawns? Stark Wars?

If the same director who excreted The last Jedi is in charge I won't bother.

Game of Thrones is pretty good most of the time - maybe they can save it from him but I doubt it.

I really hope they time jump forward 100+ years so we can get away from these characters and see something new.

While they might bring in GOT writers it'll be covering old ground since Star Wars had incest before it was cool.

Rian Johnson will be doing a trilogy. So whether you liked TLJ or not, that's still happening. But if we could keep complaints about that particular film contained to it's own thread, that'd be t'riffic.

This is a separate one entirely.

I do wonder if they'll be delving into pre-Republic times. Korriban is back in Canon, as are the events there thanks to Star Wars Rebels Season 3 finale (and what a finale that was), so anything could happen.

Be interesting to see how the Thrones crew can do without safety wheels, whilst I haven't minded the last two seasons its become a different show

To be clear, I REALLY like episode 8. I just think it would be great to move forward with the setting and see what comes next. I don't want to wallow in this era of SW forever.

Frankly I'm shocked that the same company responsible for like 8 marvel movies a year are taking it so slowly with star wars.

Arguably more expensive - there's fewer real world locations that can be used without any modification than Marvel.

For instance, at least part of the upcoming Infinity War was filmed in Edinburgh, on a street I can't type out due to filters, but I assure you is pronounced 'Coburn'. That's in the Old Town, with it's distinctive architecture.

So if a script calls for that, there's places you can go - saving costs on design, build etc.

The Special Effects budget is probably 5x more, also takes longer to process? Just a wild ass guess but I'm sticking stubbornly to those guns.

Also, they should try a low budget star wars film. Like, instead of 12 Angry Men, we get 12 Angry Masters, where the Jedi Counsel debates Anakin's appointment to Master.

I'd watch that.

It's a good one! Don't let the Black and White fool you.

Fifth? Is there another trilogy being made at the same time I don't know about? You've got the prequel, the midqual, the current modern day one.

Rian Johnson? Damn it, I hope he learns his bloody lesson with the backlash from TLJ and doesn't just ignore it by listening to the arse kissing "critics".

Rian Johnson has a trilogy as well, which is the fourth.

This one is confirmed to be separate to that.

..So he has Two Trilogy's he's making? What upper head thought this was a good idea?

Nope.

He directed The Last Jedi, but Episode IX is going back to JJ Abrams.

So Rian Johnson just has the one trilogy.

He isn't doing the current "trilogy", just The Last Jedi (movie 8). JJ Abrams is did movie 7 and will do movie 9.

It took me a minute, after drinking some coffee to wake up and re-reading the post again to parse where I was getting things wrong. For some reason I thought it was saying Rian Johnson was going to be doing two sets of extra movies, as was announced a few months ago and with this topic another set of movies as well.

I had to parse out that he was meaning two entirely different people were directing a star wars movie (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss), and that Rian Johnson was not making about six plus star wars movies. Don't read while half asleep!

Is cool.

I'm hopeful that JJ can make movie 9 more like movie 7.

I'm not hopeful that RJ will make a good trilogy after watching movie 8.

Separate trilogies, as I understand it. Johnson will have his personal trilogy of failure, the game of thrones people will have a different one.

Same. I am not hopeful for anything Star Wars now. Honestly talking about a fifth trilogy already when the third trilogy isn't finished just sounds bad. They are already throwing around terms like "sequel fatigue" so what does this mean for the next few years? Toy sales were down 47% in 2017 and since that is where the money is, I would believe Star Wars is going to become less and less profitable every year.

Ah right - might well watch the GOT team one - depending on the trailers.

Maybe my expectations won't be subverted about having aliens in this one.

It's weird when the resistance is so weirdly humans only when they should be practically parading around all sorts of aliens.

Rebels were pretty human focussed too. Handful of Dressilians on Endor, and that was yer lot in the OT. None on Hoth, none on Yavin IV.

Its a pain to have aliens actually doing stuff without a big CGI / model bill. Unless you just go for the odd weird bit stuck to your face like most sci-fi shows. Of course TLJ had much larger budget and still didn't do it.

Plus TLJ team had trouble enough writing convincing human characters, never mind aliens.

We did get our customary Big Gribbly Scene in the casino though, where we catch a glimpse of the denizens.

I would like to see more aliens. I'm of the mind that the Cantina scene in A New Hope was a major part in the success of that film. Not being 'Slightly Bumpy Nose' aliens ala Star Trek, or 'Disco Two Heads' ala Buck Rogers et al was quite something, and really sold it as being Not Here.

Sure we now know said effects were done surprisingly cheaply, aided by little to no dialogue or need for moving parts, but it didn't half bring the galaxy to life.

Right, enough stuff about TLJ. Already a thread for that as I said.

Let's get wishlisting about what two new trilogies (regardless of director) might be able to show us.

Me? I want a clean break from the existing saga for both. A bit of The Old Republic wouldn't go amiss, nor would a trilogy potentially set during The Clone Wars - or the very founding of the Old Republic.

Heck, I'd be happy with one about The First Order. I may be in a minority here, but I think it'd be an interesting watch.

I expect Jar-Jar is to blame for the lack of Alien main characters in the franchise, Chewie had the Alien sidekick thing down and then the CGI addicted bit of Georges brain threw us Jar-Jar and that was that
