Subject: Heavy Weapon Team bases

I have a lot of old heavy weapon teams. Since they did not come with a big base like the new heavy weapons teams does that mean they don't need one? If so how close do they need to be to each other? Are shots from the gun or are they from the crew? I would imagine if you weren't playing on a big base then heavy weapon shots would have to be from the gun, but lasgun shots would be from the individual infantry model to play like artillery weaponry do in the forgeworld appendixes.

Heavy weapons teams are a single model with two wounds so far as the rules are concerned. If you wish to be strictly in line with that, put them on a 60mm base.
If not, then I'd suggest just informing your opponent and measuring to/from each of the two models for their own individual weapon firing.

No official answer to this. You need to sort it out(as usual with 40k rules).
Models can be used with bases they came so your heavy weapons are legal despite being old as hell and not even single base like used to be. But how to play it? That's another thing. You could play also that it's only the main guy that matters for anything and other is just extra for looks(as ruleswise you have 9 models and 9 bases anyway). Or that the 2 are 1 big model so everything is measured from either point. But that could be seen as trying to get advantage from having 2 bases 2" separate...
Most cleanest solutions are probably only one actually counts for anything(LOS etc) or both count but they need to be in b2b with each other.

I was thinking models need to stay base to base since they count as one model and any point on the models counted as a target or a point from which to fire from. I see some people complaining about this since it could allow for a more narrow deployment, but as you said it's what they came with and there's no rules saying otherwise on bases they need.

My friend bought a pile of cheap MDF bases n eBay and rebased all his dudes. It's an inexpensive option if you're concerned.

I was looking on GW website and they still show steel legion missile launchers on a single infantry base. It's mostly my concern for tournament use. If it is I'll have some cheap large bases to put them on. I never glue my guys on to the bases anyways so I can remove one as a wound counter

Play it the way they were intended in 2nd edition - the two models (or three, if it's a mortar or lascannon team) need to be in coherency with each other - like a squad within a squad, if you will. When the team takes its first wound, remove the loader. That should work well enough.

Removing one changes the LOS, so some tourney opponents may get miffed if you do!

Big house rule that actually alters the rule interaction. If you treat 2 models as 2 W1 model it DOES have difference with game effect compared to 1 model with 2 wounds. For example 1 hit that caused d3 damage won't kill both models. If one model is removed you technically wouldn't be forced to remove other like if W2 model gets wounded. Also main model + separate model LOS wise plays havoc.
Cleanest solutiion by far would be rebase. If that's not feasible without damaging models I would personally play rulewise as 1 model with unusual base(2 round bases togehter) and you have to keep them b2b and I would also keep them in same position all the time.

Really, the bases don't make as much difference as you make out. I'd remove the loader as a "wound marker", but if it makes that much of a difference (I admit, I'd forgotten about the effect of multiple-damage weapons), then simply treat them as a single stat line represented by two individual miniatures. Keep them about half an inch apart and it's close enough to the size of the usual 65mm base as to be OK. No need to keep them in the same position either; after all, I can rotate a HWT model in place which will affect the position of the two miniatures on it too.
Ultimately, there isn't really a RAW scenario for this, as the rules make no mention of bases, and just assume you've got them on whatever they use nowadays. Even the "use the bases it was sold with" isn't a rule as such, and falls down if I use my metal Dreadnoughts, as they didn't come with a base.

Good point! Automatically Appended Next Post: Im contacting ITC Tournament official for their ruling. Automatically Appended Next Post: They said to be safe put it on a 60mm base, but it depends on the event TOs thoughts. Automatically Appended Next Post: worst case scenario I'd use blue tac to hold models in place on top of a 60mm base.
