Got to thinking, what are people's go-to for upgrades, choices that are really not choices?

For me on my Intercessors they will take max Aux GrenadeLaunchers

For my IG I take Boltguns on Sgt's

Chainaxes and chainswords on Berzerkers, power fist on the champ. Oh, and an Icon of Wrath.

I also always take the Power Sword on the sergeant too. 3 attacks base makes the 4 points really worth it imo.

The dark behind the eyes.

Dark Eldar:

Ossefactors on Wracks, as not only are the other weapons still garbage, but the Liquifier Gun actually costs 4pts more than the Ossefactor. I can only presume that someone on the GW design team lost a lost of terminators to a Liquifier Gun back in 5th, and have had a grudge against it ever since. Also, big thank you to whoever on the design team thought it would be a great idea to give a melee unit a Heavy sniper weapon.

I'd always want at least one Shardnet on Wyches and probably an Agoniser on the sergeant as well.

Haemonculi always get the Electrocorrosive Whip, because everything else is still garbage.

Imperial Guard:

Scions always get Plasmaguns and (where available) Plasma Pistols, because those are the only weapons that actually synergise with them.

Not auto-upgrades per se, but I'm working on a Hydra-themed army, so each HQ has some specific wargear.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.

For the auto GLs, do remember that you can only use one per squad.

But for 1 point, I always include one.

I pretty much always slap a combi-weapon on my rhinos. Usually nothing more than the standard combi-bolter, but even then it's only 2 points to make the rhino actually useful while it drives up, and after it dumps its cargo.

You can take two but only use one, because it is a grenade.

Storm Guardians - why are aeldari blades and chainswords the same cost when one is clearly better in every situation?

You need to look at the cost relative to the codex. Bolters are 1 point in the Guard codex but 0 in the Marine codex.

Unless you Combat Squad.

Obviously anything free that is optional for modelling reasons should always be taken. Chainswords especially.

Combi-Bolters on HQs

For 2 points, it’s the best upgrade for any HQ unless you’re kitting them out for a special weapon

Which is therefore a lost Sergeant and therefore an extra attack.

The sergeant didn't magically vanish, you get 21 attacks regardless, just split over two squads, and you now get to fire 2 Noobtubes instead of 1 per turn. Fair trade-off.

For Deathwatch, either Chainswords or pistols. For the same points you can either have a guy with a bolter and 2 attacks, or a guy with a bolter and 3 attacks.

Really anything free that has no downside.

Not sure what you're getting at here. Both are in the Craftworlds codex, and both cost 0 points. Chainswords are just strictly better by an extremely large margin.

I think he was suggesting that two five man squads is better than one ten man squad because you get an extra sarge.

It's also likely that is strictly correct to not equip any Ork vehicle with optional weapons.

A lot of Ork upgrades are bafflingly free. Which makes no sense why they're not already on.
