Subject: What genre is Warhammer 40k called in French?
So, in French at school I want to say that I play warhammer, however we are discourage from using "English Brand Names" so I wanted to say "I play tabletop wargames" but those aren't words in the dictionary, so in French what genre would Warhammer belong to?

Usually we say «jeu de figurine». Literally it's “model games” but it's really about Warhammer, Warmachine, and all the other games with model painting and all that. Alternatively you can say « jouer aux pitou » but that's much more slang, and even less well-known than « jeu de figurine » or « Warhammer ».
We write this : « Va te faire enculer connard». Or, when in a hurry to surrender, just « Enculté ». You can hear it in this video extract: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOxUWLl2HFs

You could call a tabletop game "jeu de plateau."or "jeu de figurines". However the word "wargame" that literally translates "jeu de guerre", remains the same and there is no dedicated word of french root.
As far as warhammer 40k's setting you could comment on it saying that it belongs to the "genre de la science-fiction"
Btw great that you learn french, my native language is a superb and subtle one
PS: When you want us french to surrender, make sure we haven't brought in the baguettes, otherwise you're in for a good spanky humiliation!!

I do really like the language, it has a sort of "upper-class" feel to it, although that will be a consequence of getting invaded by the an French, it's good to know that I can tell them how much I hate them XD
It's really hard at first but once you get a hang of it I find French quite fun to learn.

If your army is still stuck with an Index then the correct adjective would be 'merde'.
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

de merde, to be precise. Ex: une armée de merde, une partie de merde etc

Actually surrender would be Lâchez vos armes or Rendez-vous!
Enculé is much more versatile and can be used in everyday lige siyuation that don't require subtle, polite and frizndly handle. Plus it more likely to make a french punch you in the face than actually surrender.
+D'ailleurs je sais pas d'où tu viens en France chez moi en Champagne-Ardennes personne dit jouer aux pitous mdr.

My girlfriend, who doesn't speak French, say it sounds like some kind of posh version of German for princesses . (German isn't her native tongue either but she knows it better than French)

I'd second that "jouer aux pitous" isn't a very widespread term, I never heard of it.
The word "wargame" is often used in French, as the literal translation "jeu de guerre" sounds like little kids running around with stick making pew-pew sounds (maybe Warhammer isn't always that far off, but still…).
Otherwise, a common way to explain something in another language when you don't really know the correct word for it, is to just explain the whole thing. You could say you buy, assemble and paint plastic figures which can then be used to play strategic/tactical games. And in this instance it might even be better, as it would lead to a longer sentence (I suppose the idea is to make you speak/make your own sentences as much as possible), and at the same time gives context to everyone who doesn't know what tabletop wargaming is.

I'm surprised she thinks french resembles german. I have an upper C1 level in german and have never noticed it! Where's she from though. (Seigneur c'est bizarre de devoir causer en anglais à un compatriote pour qu'ils comprennent!)

She is Czech.
I have an A1 level in German, I can say "Du bist an Schwein du muss crepieren" but I didn't notice a lot of similarities either. I think it was more a comment on the way it sound than on the grammar or anything though .

That is the "intro to the game" page, should have at least one term that you can call the game.
Btw just read that, apart from being overly enthusiastic and feature a extensive view of french adjectives, and thereofre being quite annoying, it's not of great help.
