when takeing just a single knight to support your main army list, what knight do you take, and what relic/ court trait do you take if any

For me, I am considering the following:
Knight Castellan (604 pts)
House Krast
Spend 2 CP pre-game for the following
Exaulted Court: First Knight (re-roll 1's to hit)
Relic: Cawl's Wrath (relic Plasma Decimator)

Gallant, ion bulwark, and relic to taste (i like the gauntlet). Cheap and very cheerful for 354pts.

you get no household with an aux detach. only a vanilla knight (not even a freeblade).

the question is a bit weird. depending on your main army setup, id go for a gallant most of the time. give him sanctuary and charge enemy lines. paragon gauntlet is heavily situational imho, only preferrable if you go vs other biggies.

He still gets a House, just not the trait. This is important as it grants access to Warlord traits, relics and stratagems specific to that House.

The Krast Castellan is very good but Dominus class really want Ion Bulwark for protection as Rotate Ion Shields costs 3CPs on them for some reason.

I would say a better choice is Raven Castellan with Ion Bulwark and Cawl's Wrath. Then you use the Raven Stragem to reroll all 1s in your shooting phase (not just hits but wounds, number of shots etc). With all the swingy weapons on the Castellan, the ability to turn all your 1s into something better is golden!

If you want to go Krast then a Crusader with First Knight is quite effective but cheaper. Add Endless Fury (Relic AGC) for massive rates of fire and you can use RIS for 1CP to boost your defenses.

Or just get a Gallant with Landstrider and Sanctuary and go in Full Tilt.

Go offensive, gallant with house krast first knight warlord trait and the headsman mark as heirloom. You get to re-roll hit rolls of 1s, with 15 attacks hitting on 2+ in melee, you will score plenty of hits against hordes. The heirloom gives you +1 damage to units with 10 or more wounds and +2 damage to TITANIC units, making you efficient against vehicles.

Go defensive, gallant with armour of the sainted ion for 2+ armor sv against melee attacks, even at AP-3 you still have 5+. Ion bulwark for 4+ invuln sv against shooting attacks.

There are plenty of combos for the gallant.
