Hey all,

I downloaded digital copies of both Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunt and as I patiently await for my box to arrive as well as my easy to build kits I have come up with the question...

“How many battalions if any at all should I go for with each army?”

I know you get one at the start of each hero phase but would it be prudent to have multiple battalions to get as many command points as possible?

For example in my 2000 point Sacrosanct Chamber I was thinking the following:

Hammers of Sigmar

Grand Convocation
Lord Arcanum on Gryph charger
Lord Exorcist
2xKnights Incantor
Total: 750pts

Hail Storm Battery
Lord Ordinator
1x3 Castigators
1xCelestar Ballista
Total: 440pts

Cleansing Phalanx
2x5 Evocators
2x5 Sequitors
Total: 760pts

So my question is by having the three battalions do I weaken the list?

I’d like to make the most out of the box set and even though I have seen someone mention on a board that the Exorcist is no good, I want to play him for the rule of cool.

I also ask because I feel like the Nighthaunt don’t seem to group up as well battalion wise as the stormcast do.

Thanks for your time,
ChappyP

It looks good, but it really runs you a bit too thin on the ground. Also, this means you cannot play matched play 2k as there are only 2 battleline units. The sacrosanct battalions are not very good, and yet you pay a premium. It would be a lot better to run 20-25 sequitors, they provide much more than any battalion could give you. Obviously, rule of cool prevails, but the battalions just aren't worth it. (And 750 points for underwhelming characters is meh)

The good one in there is cleansing phalanx. It uses units you want to bring (both amazing choices) and then buffs them. 2 squads of 10 sequitors plus 2 squads of 5 evocators is a solid core.

Can't see myself use more than 2, usually 1.

With my nurgle army none, because I don't feel any are worth their point cost.

One at the most for my Slaaneshi,

maybe two with my Seraphon

Blades of Khorne's Gore Pilgrims battalion is still pretty worth it. I can't justify any of the others, however. Gore Pilgrims boosts your core support heroes (Slaughterpriests and Bloodsecrator) and covers nearly the entire battlefield in a fearless, +1A, re-roll successful spell casts bubble, while also granting the priests re-rolls to their prayers. Since fearless is amazing on Blades of Khorne and prayers are even more amazing (here let me spit D6 mortal wounds at you, no you cannot unbind this. Oh also come closer to my units while I make them more powerful), this battalion is pretty much mandatory. I've been trying to make a list without it but the benefits to it keep outweighing the cost.

Wow,

Thanks for the replies! I am starting to think 1 to 2 battalions are the way to go. So far I do two battalions in my Ironjaws and Blades of Khorne as well as my soon to be Sacrosanct army.

However I am thinking of dropping the Grand Convocation in the list above as well as a Knight Icantor for more Sequitors so that I will have an actual legal match play army.

I am just not sure whic wargrove to go with for my sylvaneth.

The Gnarlroot wargrove is pretty good. An extra spell on every wizard, plus a heal spell, with easy to unlock requirements.

If I’m doing Gnarlroot the answer is two, since it required Household to use it. I’m also building a Guardians of Alarielle list that will only use one battalion since that one eats up three quarters of your points minimum by itself.

I can't possibly see not taking at least 1. The benefits to ANY battalion are worth fielding regardless of the specifics. Gaining 1 CP, 1 artifact, and lowering my drop count is worth fielding a battalion for.

Why would it lower your drop count? Battalions aren’t considered a single drop are they?

They are indeed!

Yep. From page 240 of the Age of Sigmar core rulebook:

During set-up, you can set up some or all of the units from a warscroll battalion at the same time rather than setting up each unit individually.

Oh, oh I completely missed that bit. My 2k lists are both a single drop.

Wow I need to check this threat more often.

Thanks for the discussion, as of now I am looking at at least two battalions for my various list.

My Ironjaws has two Ironfist battalions, my sylvaneth uses three in 2000 points, a household, an outcast all under I think Gnarlroot with Drycha.

My stormcast warrior chamber is tough, I want to use a Lord of the Storm and a thunderhead brotherhood. For my sacrosanct chamber I think I am doing two a cleansing phalanx and a hail storm battery. I was going to add in a grand convocation as above, but I dropped it in favor of some more Sequitors.

Finally for my blades of Khorne I have gone with gore pilgrims and a skull take mainly to use units I find visually appealing.

Anyway thoughts too many battalions not enough?

One issue I see with older tomes is some of the battalions seem rather lackluster.

Depends on how competitive you are trying to be. Older tomes are usually not very competitive at all so are avoided.

Do you think plague cyst and blessed sons could be worth it? mystic shield for the whole army, reroll all hits on blightkings and 2d6 for priximity mortal wounds. three artifacts, 2 command points. Thinking about trying it out!

You can try it out. For me, taking that would involve removing an entire unit of plague bearers and then a half of a blight king unit.

I don't know that the three artifacts and bonus command points would be worth much to my build from that point.
