This is my first 40k army, I've not even played the game yet. I did however play warhammer fantasy alot and also infinity.

Man, greenstuffing is hard, I'm having a hard time not getting fingerprints in the GS. I'm also considering adding some dead grass tuft to my basing theme.
Anyways, I'm hoping to keep the motivation going for this project.

I'm actually working on some eevil Tau right now too, finally painting some minis I converted many years ago. Digging your Gurgle boys, and stealing that dangly tentacle drone idea

- Salvage

Yea, greenstuff is tough!

Get some modeling tools and use those exclusively, once you've got your greenstuff in approximately the right size/shape/position. Just keep dunking your tools in water and lightly shaking them off, so they don't stick to the GS. I also find for some more elaborate pieces, I have to model a base in the rough shape, let that dry, then model bits onto the base to get more details and such.

Pancakeonions I do have tools and I do keep them wet, building in stages might be something to try tho.

I'd agree with adding some dead grass to the bases for a little flavour.

Dunno if you know, but Tau are usually shown with blue-grey skin.
