Hi guys,
just a quick poll to see how many "drops" on average does the community has ! May be useful for some.
I used to get as little drops as possible, but now I run way more units as I play more MSU and as deploying first "only" give +1 instead of auto winning the initative, so I have usually more than 10.

Depends entirely on the army played, and the points level of the match.

If I was to average across all my armies/games played, and for a 2000 point match, Id say about 10. Not sure what use that sort of 'data' is

Yeah, sorry, I meant, for an average game of 2000 points !
Nothing really useful, I was just a bit curious, I don't pretend to do scientific research here

Well let's see my orks generally run 4-6 characters, 4-6 boyz/stormboyz, 3-6 grotz, 1-4 KMK(depending on do I go for 1 deployment or spread them out) and maybe 2-3 other units.

So anywhere from 15 to 25 though albeit the upper level is pretty damn rare.

My lists have around 12-15 units with no transports, so I have 12-15 drops

It'll vary upon the army & I haven't made 8th ed lists for most of my stuff yet, but I'd expect the average will be about 10-12.

Unless you are playing Knights, I don't think it really matters. Only Knight armies can reliably build towards having less drops than their opponent (unless the opponent is also Knights)
Having a high number of units can be advantageous too. Though you will not get +1 for the roll to go first, you do get to "save" your more valuable units to be deployed last once you see where the enemy have deployed.

Depends on game size. I had a 1,000pt game last week where I deployed three units in my Deathwatch army (1: Blackstar containing kill team and Watch Master. 2: Razorback containing kill team. 3: Primaris kill team).

Normal-size games it's usually about 10-12.

I haven't played yet, but I'm building a Militarum Tempestus army. I could deploy on the field 19 units. I could deploy as little as five first turn, but I would probably usually deploy seven first turn. The difference being is that I'll have four Taurox Primes that will hold scions, and three Valkyries that can hold scions, as well as the ability to aerial drop my scions. I could run the Valkyries as a three-unit squadron, and therefor deploy them as one unit in a auxiliary detachment. So five total with seven command points, seven total with nine command points, or more than that and being stupid.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Depends what army I'm running; my pure Custodes are generally under 10 drops; my mixed Imperium can vary massively depending on how many knights I'm taking; my Khorne and mixed Chaos can almost make it to 20 drops; and my monster mash lists only ever have 6 or less.

My current Space Marine army can pack it down to 8 during deployment, although it has 15 units. I could Combat Squad out to 19 if that seemed useful for some reason.

Most of my recent lists have 18 or so, but that was when I was running the Lucky 32 alongside my Dark Angels and Knight Gallant. Even my recent Tau lists have a lot of drops because of MSU Strike Teams (for 2 battalions).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I chose 12, but in reality that is typical of units and ignores characters. Since I average 5-6 characters...I will say I wish they had done all characters deploy at once. I understand the tactical side of not and use it myself often...but the large number of characters now can get old in deployment.

I think there should have been more numbers on the poll, I have ~12 drops on average at 2k depending on what is in my transports and my opponents tend to have at least 3 more drops than me.

I consciously try and build lists around the 7-8 mark. That means I'll need a transport. It means I'll get +1 against most lists, but it also means I'll get outbid by super-low-drop armies: that's fine, I won't lose any sleep over it. I think making a small concession to come in under 10 is definitely worth it in my limited experience.

My Eldar army battling Deathwatch at the weekend had just 7 units to deploy as my oppenent had. Then we have rolled for first turn (he got it) but I have stolen the initiative.

I haven't played in a while, and have kept my army in a shoebox, so currently, i have 5 units i can scrap together. Every one of those Dark Angel warriors are true survivors, and have suffered many hardships together. The time is drawing near for their comeback. For the Chapter. For the Lion. For the Emperor!

I will forever remain humble because I know I could have less.
I will always be grateful because I remember I've had less.

Yes I should have done better, but I honestly thought 12 was already big
My main opponent plays tyranids and necrons so has very few units

Impossible to answer this. If the army has a chance at almost always winning the drops roll. I almost always try to maximize it. If there is no chance of winning it. I go all out and include as many units as I possibly can.

+1 to go first is great.

Opponent deploying entire army before you deploy your best units - is the next best option.

This is one reason eldar are so strong. Wave serpants can hold so many drops in them. It's another reason my repulsor lists do well...Sometimes I am running 4-5 drops.

My Tau list is also easily over 20. The new cover stratagem is hella good for FW and riptides. Even Magnus+ Mortarian lists still have like 7-9 on average.

My 2,000 point list of Imperial Fists is typically 19 drops, though I can reduce that a little bit using transports if need be.
