After finally getting settled in my new place I've found myself sat at the table staring down these guys. My old metal harlequins.

It's been a few days and I haven't got a lot done...but I'm pleased with my progress!

Turns out diamonds are pretty difficult to paint (especially for a first try!).

I almost painted the chainsword in the same diamond pattern, but in the end went for the solid yellow. Partly because it was very difficult to get the pattern to look right at the corners between the sides, but also because I like how it matches up with the solid yellow arm on the other side. Let me know what you think.

Bold choice, yellow over black. You've done a good job layering the yellow on there, and I think highlighting it. Looking forward to see what else you do with those grand Harlequins.

I think that is looking very good for a first try. Not sure about the yellow on the chainsword yet, I assume you are going to do more with the hilt?

I guess I am, like many, a creature of habit! I learned to paint by undercoating everything in black and I've stuck to that for as long as I remember... I might have considered priming in white, but because a lot of the rest is going to be black I think testing my patience on the yellow was worth it! And yes, the yellow and black diamonds are both highlighted, it looks better in person I think. The pictures never do a miniature justice in my opinion!

I agree on the chainsword. I'm not 100% sold on it yet, but the only colour on here so far is yellow, so yes there is a lot yet to go. Not certain what I'm doing with the hilt yet, but the rune details on the sword itself will be in silver I think, or maybe a bone colour. And maybe a bright purple gemstone to add some contrast. We'll see... Watch this space!

When in doubt about priming, I just go with grey. It's a nice neutral and yo can easily throw some black on parts and lighter grey or near white on parts that will be brighter. Grey can also act as a neutral tie-in for multiple colors, so if you need another color on a miniature but don't want it to clash with everything a grey (dark or light, your pick) is a viable option.

I thought the yellow chainsword gave it a nice bit of Harlequin flourish. I can see it being maybe too much to some. But, it is a Harlequin!

Looking good so far. Diamonds came out good, and the yellow/black combo works well.

Good advice! I'll see about adding some grey if I want another colour. I was going to do lots of the details in silver though, which I guess is like a metallic grey...

I think possibly right now the sword is a bit too much, but once the whole miniature is complete I'm sure it'll look better. If there's one thing I've learned about painting it's to not judge a WIP too harshly! Maybe a couple of black stripes might break up the yellow a bit if it comes to it.

Great advice and thoughts everyone, keep it coming!

More progress!

Completed the metallic areas, very happy with the gold but still unsure of the silver sash. Silver has never been one of my strongest colours.

Hair and the smaller cloth are base coated here in a purple colour (although it's difficult to see because it's quite dark. I intend to brighten it up a little, but not too much so as to avoid clashing with the yellow.

Since the photo I have also base coated the main robes and the mask in grey to highlight up to a white. I have always struggled with white, so any advice on that front would be greatly appreciated. My plan is to base in Dawnstone, wash in Nuln Oil, highlight with a lighter grey, then white, then glaze (hopefully subtly) in yellow before a final white highlight. Never done that before, but experimentation is what the hobby is all about eh?

Lots of progress! Calling this guy done now I think. I feel like there are perhaps areas where I'm not completely satisfied, or where I could keep adding extra detail, but at some point I just have to stop call it finished and move on... Overall I'm very happy. Can't wait to paint up his buddies.

Comments, advice and criticism welcome!

The yellow on the chainsword has grown on me! the accents on the hilt do help. And I think that the mask turned out very well.

The gun does seem a little flat, but that's not too much of a much.

A whole team like that is going to look quite cool.

After saying I was done with this guy last week I inevitably went back on that comment... I wasn't quite happy with the mask so I went back and touched that up a bit. Whether or not it's made a difference is another thing, but I'm happy.

Secondly, got around to basing him. First attempt at basing a miniature. Back in the day I used to just slap some paint on there and that would be it. Decided I'd try a bit more for this project and I think it's turned out well.

Still on the fence about the beige Eldar ruin coloured rock the Harlequin is standing over. Maybe I should make it grey like the rest of the base? I'm also considering adding some extra detail just to make it pop a bit more. But another part of me says it looks great and I should just leave it as is. Thoughts?

Great figure, nice basing- keep the rock beige.

I would leave the base as-is. It looks good

Second Harlequin on the way! Got a base coat down on the green areas. I'll be honest, I tried to get the diamonds down on both sleeves... But with the angles and the way the pattern should contort around the elbow it just wasn't happening for me! Maybe I'll try on the sleeves again next time!

Thinking about how I'm to do the blades going forward. The last one was a chainsword so a pretty easy decision to paint the yellow. I'm wondering if I should keep with that theme and just paint each blade in the respective colour (in this case green), or to go another direction. Maybe gold as I've done before with the hilt of the chainsword, or maybe bone as the box art is I believe? Thoughts? I've got some thinking to do on that front anyway!

I have been busy! For the sword, in the end, I followed this tutorial https://youtu.be/clWZUwAN_zc for the Necron warscythe blade. I imagine it'll work for other colours, but I guess we'll see!

Pretty pleased overall, although I think I prefer the yellow. But I do like the look of them both together. I'm looking forward to getting more done!

One thing I have learned is that it might be a good idea to base all the rest together. The slight differences in shades on each base are infuriating!

Very much liking how they look together. I wouldn't worry too much about the bases. As the unit grows it will even out, I think.

Long time no posting. Been sidetracked from painting for a bit, but want to keep updating this thread to keep me motivated to paint.

This month is a red and green almost Christmas themed player! Not hugely proud of this one as I am the others right now, but maybe that will change once I tidy it up a bit with some more layers and washes.

Maybe at some point I'll finally head down to my local shop and get a game!

You didn't paint one up to look like the jokercs squeeze?

How do I paint one like the joker?

Update! I finished the red one and I'm happy overall. I think they all look great together so far and I can't wait to start the last two players!

I wondered if anyone had any advice on the colours? I definitely want to do a purple and a blue one, but wondered what good contrast colours would be? I know the red and green players sort of match eachother, so I thought maybe a purple with yellow would match. But then the blue guy would be all left on his own? So I thought blue and yellow would be good. That would tie him in to the rest, but then that leaves the question about what colour to match with the purple guy! Decisions decisions.

Green contrasts well with purple but you've already got quite a lot of green. Yellow?

You've got one green and one with green accents so one yellow and one with yellow accents would work, no?

As for blue, red.

Then you've got a red one and one with red accents, too.

'Cause it turned out all along that the soldier who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other officers who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, we had to disband the regiment.

Great idea on the red and blue.

My only concern with doing purple with yellow accents is that then the yellow and purple ones become a pair, and the green and red ones become a pair. The blue one would maybe feel like an odd one out? But then maybe that's my fault... Maybe I should have gone for blue accents on the red one and green on the purple and it all might have matched better!

Maybe purple with blue accents might work? I could try a bright purple and a darker blue?

Some rescheduling meant I ended up with an unexpected day off today. Trying to get these guys painted up in preparation for my first game tomorrow night at the local GW.

Pretty happy with both so far. The purple came out a bit more pink than I had imagined, but I think it looks good. Now I I just need to decide on the accent colours!

With the pinkness, you could go for something that's maybe a bit neon blue with the purple?

I'm not massively up to date on Aeldari fluff, but doesn't one of them dance the part of Slaanesh in the tale of the Fall?

Having thought about it a bit more, I think I'm going to go for yellow on the purple guy and orange on the blue guy. When I spoke to the guys at GW yesterday they were telling me that ideally I would have 6 players. To that paint scheme opens it up to having an orange player with blue accents to complete the set (somewhere down the line...!)

As for the fluff, I'm not too sure. I'm just got back in to the 40k universe after maybe 5-6 years out. I'm still trying to figure out where along the way the Eldar changed their name to Aeldari! Love the idea of this player taking the part of Slaanesh though! When I get around to writing up some fluff I'll keep that in mind!

I like that purple!

I almost want to suggest purple and orange but that is probably a terrible idea.

Haha yeah I did consider the purple and orange, but I think it would have clashed badly!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Managed to get them done! Really pleased with both. The colours compliment each other well, and I am very pleased to have been able to get them painted up so quickly.

I think they all look pretty great set up next to each other. I'm not sure about the red now, I think he kind of sticks out. When I finally get around to a 6th player in orange, maybe he'll fit in more.

Now on to the Shadowseer... I'm thinking white with each colour (yellow, green, red, blue, purple, orange) in there somewhere to try and tie it all in together. I'm thinking about wet blending the robes from white to each accent colour. Try my hand at that, see if I can still do it! Any thoughts or advice on the Shadowseer would be greatly appreciated.

edit: I'll get some better pics with better light at some point

Excellent group shot- with terrific, vivid colors! Each one an individual, but together they form an eye-catching composite. Back in the day (late 80's) a lot of folks forgot that Harlequin were not fancy but ordinary Eldar- that they were a theatrical troupe as well as deadly fighters. Your color selection is very much in keeping with the idea of a 'cast, where individuals need to be identified, but there is still a sense of 'unit' amongst them. Well done!
