In the new bla kstone fortress game is a new character a large very old imperial robot. The preview makes it sound like it may be sentient and has its own goals. Is it possible it is a surviving man of iron and could it be the start of them returning

I doubt it - GW seem to be ignoring the Men of Iron. My guess would be it's a brain in a jar inside rather than a robot, or it's previously been tasked with finding something inside the fortress.

Another reason against this is that the Men of Iron existed long before the Imperium. It's possible that one may have been found and reprogrammed for use by the Imperium, but that's also unlikely due to the Imperium's lack of knowledge about older tech.

Nah, doesn't seem powerful enough, what with Men of Iron being hyped up to rather silly levels.
More likely its either a brain in a jar or just a robot that grew a mind of its own, since imperial bots tend to do that.

Power is relative though.
Right now, we’re not terribly far off mass automation of labour.
If that works in a Utopian Ideal, it’ll mean nothing but leisure time for mankind. That could lead to us becoming decadent, soft and unused to strenuous activity.
If things got Pete Tong there, even a middling level of combat competence could seem insurmountable.
Right now, we just don’t know how soft Man had become during The Dark Age Of Technology.

I'd love for it to be a Man of Iron, enslaved like the EVAs in Evangelion but I don't see GW doing that.

Why enslaved? Why reprogrammed? Why not just be a bona fide Man of Iron bluffing his way through 10.000 years of imperial history pretending to be a loyal servitor?
I don't think that's the case, but it would be way cooler than a shackled one.

I doubt it.
My best guess. He is controlled by the mentioned 'Magos' because the Magos devised a crude form of biotransference, a la Necrontyr, and the robot is the Magos.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

Don't forget that the Men of Iron likely had many different kinds of machine, so Ux-025 might not have been their newest or best and might not even have been originally made as a front line battle unit. It could even have had original functions which were nothing to do with any form of combat. So just because its not a one-man(er robot)-army doesn't mean its not a Man of Iron.

Technically none of the fluff bits GW has released have confirmed UR-025 to specifically be Man of Iron, just that it's a sentient robot from the same age.

If that image is legit, it flat out says it's a Man of Iron.

I dunno, I ain't a native English speaker, but as I understood it it says that the Men of Iron were wiped out but this fella here survived, not that it in particular was a Man of Iron. Other types of "Men", like Stone and Gold have been mentioned, and I recall reading about Alan Merret mentioning that Stone in "Men of Stone" refers to Silicon, which means that "Men of Iron" doesn't refer to all sentient machines humans made, but to ones of a certain type.

Nobody is saying that the MoI were all sentient machines from the DAOT. This image is quite literally saying that the unit claiming the designation of UR-025 is a Man of Iron, and that its survival is based on the fact that the Imperium believed it when it said it was something else.

It's a cool nod. I'm curious to see where GW goes with it. Either he's the vanguard of a force of men of iron returning, or far more likely, he's the last of his kind looking to rebuild his "race" for lack of a better word.
I'm heavily tempted to buy the box just for him alone.

It is the wording 'Yet UR-025 has persisted...' which is sufficient to confirm that it is a MoI or at very least a sentient pre-cursor to them.
