I define types in the sense of a theme such as: forest, desert, ice, industrial etc.
I have one gaming mat in an open grass theme and the RoBG in an ice world theme.
For scenery I have:
An Ork town/looted buildings
Industrial / Imperial sector
Woods / forest
Tyranid infestation set
FW Necron tomb citadel
Eldar-esque ruins
A few pics

So... I'm working on a Daemons/Renegades/Heretic Astartes soup and a board for them to inhabit/fight over. It'll be a (mostly) modular 6'x4' city board on a grid, but I'll end up with twelve 2'x2' tiles allowing me to switch some in and out for regular games and mix things up. Terrain that is currently WIP; 2'x2' Slaanesh Summoning Circle + Sector Imperialis ruins tile x2 2'x2' Slaanesh Statue Garden tile 2'x2' Mamayev Kurgan tile feat. The Motherland Calls! (no photos yet exist) Terrain that is planned 2'x4' Sector Mechanicus recreation of the Dofasco Steelworks in Hamilton, ON. 2'x2' Sector Imperialis tiles x 4 2'x2' trench-line tiles x3 So, a grey board with a mix of industrial and administrative buildings, with some monuments and Daemonic influences. A. N. Other Ruined Imperial City then, really.

An odd mix of stuff.
Bolt of fabric that was crumpled and spritzed with some spray paint as a poor man’s battlemat
(I’ve got some hex based styrofoam hills in the same color scheme, but rarely use them)
3rd ed ruins
Mordheim village
Hills
Crummy off scale trees (twisted plastic core with foam glued on)
Webway portal
ADL
Crashed lander
Some LotR bookends sometimes make an appearance.
I’m dithering hard on where to go from here. I know I need more and better terrain. I’ve got some money earmarked to do so. But do I go with my original plan of building an arctic world for my Ultras? (thinking ruined refinery outpost) which would require abandoning most of what I have, or go with a forest/maiden world to match my Eldar (which would let me continue using a lot of what I have already).

Some unpainted and semi-painted industrial and ruined city bits, a few craters and other odds and ends for scatter terrain, and some old planetstrike scenery for LoS blocking.

Looks impressive but is a pain in the ass to store or transport because of all the toothpicks. I have to know because my tropical catachan jungle terrain features big spiky cacti which are also built with toothpicks. Though carry on with your project.

I have a big pile of tan plastic hills and things from a plastic dinosaurs playset that work really well as terrain, plus some strands of barbed wire and sandbags from green army men. They match the table, so "desert", I guess.
My friend has a bunch of middle-east inspired buildings, so they go well with the hills and tabletop. If only any of our armies were in desert camouflage!
However, I'm currently working to fix that problem. I've prepared the cad files, and I'm waiting for the lasercutter to be repaired so I can make some generic looking shelled buildings I can spray grey and powder with snow.
I really want to make a mud-craters-trenches-and-barbed-wire "no-man's land" board for my Guard, but nobody would want to play on said board with me.
|
Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

I have one of those cheap, plastic bathroom chest of drawers, padded out with excess foam from pluck trays, to keep them in for now.
The Mamayev Kurgan tile will be much more problematic, 'cause it'll be 15.5" tall.

I have the typical industrial sector that is so common, but I really want to make a transportable Eldar Craftworld. Nobody makes a Craftworld mat which really bugs me.

If you're on social media like FB, contact gamemat.eu; I suggested a IG air base, bam, 4-6 months later they delivered; they're cool and will respond to your suggestions.

I have a smattering at the moment, though fully half of my terrain is for other gaming projects and isn't terribly 40K suitable.
Mats:
-Steppe (dry grassland)
-Ruined concrete city-scape
-Old overgrown cobbled stones (ancient city)
-Aqua coloured "acid lake" sheet
Terrain:
-Trees and shrubs
-Desert mountains, rock outcroppings
-Gothic Imperial styled ruined city-scape
-Fences
-Industry platforms
-Industry walkways, etc...all good for 40K and Necromunda, etc.
-Some hills and/or islands depending on the mat
