My wife and I haven't unpacked everything and are trying to relax and play but we can't remember what the "shred" rule does and OCD compels me to know before moving on. I've looked for any of the rulebooks, but no joy.

Yeah, it was a general special rule of 7th edition. It granted a flat re-roll on failed to wound rolls.
