Hello! New player, wanting definition on this subject. Please C&C your replies.

I was wanting my Champion to wield a hammer instead of a sword. When a codex lists a Champion, and sword is the only option in the book, does this mean we cannot select another weapon for him? In my mind, the unit stats stay the same, and the weapon stats still the same. What gives?

If it's purely cosmetic change go ahead. As long as you aren't trying to play it as thunderhammer while unit option not having thunder hammer you are fine

Caveat being most tournaments are WYSISWG so a hammer might not work.

That said, they aren't heartless either. Put a blade on yhr bottom of the hammer handle or sticking out of the top center and now it's just a cool looking hybrid sword! Just about everyone would allow that.

Well at least here the WYSIWYG requirements would be fitted. If the guy doesn't have another weapon that could be mixed with by hammer it's WYSIWYG enough at least here.

I seriously doubt anybody's going to give a hell on that. And in FLGS games that's actually good way to find out players you don't want to waste time with anyway

Most people who really care about WYSIWYG care more about Rule of Cool. There are exceptions, especially when it comes to tournaments, though.

I’ll probably use a magnet to attach the weapon to his arm/hand. This way if I ever get into tournaments, it will be fully compliant.

This is for my grey knights army. My goal is to load units mainly with halberds and hammers, for my own personal Narrative. Both the 8th edition codex, and BattleScribe do not list another melee weapon option for the Brotherhood Champion. So the hammer mentioned would be a Nemesis Daemon Hammer, which is available to all units in general.

The Nemesis Daemon Hammer is not available to all units in general.

The Brotherhood Champion does not have the option to have any Melee weapons other than his Nemesis force sword.

With that said some opponents would be okay with you running the Nemesis force sword modeled as a hammer as long as you used the stats for the Nemesis force sword. Some opponents will object.

So it is best to discuss it with your opponent before the game.

Champions are supposed to be the chapter's most talented duelists, so they all wield swords. I guess the perception is that sword duelling requires more skill than a guy swinging a giant mace around.

For good etiquette , you should not arm a model in a way that will confuse your opponent as to what they are facing. Putting a Nemesis Daemon Hammer on a model that doesn’t have one will be confusing. If you use a much smaller hammer as your counts as Nemesis Force Sword would be much better.

I agree with this. I find it generally confusing when opponents do this. If a model only has the option for a sword, but you model him with a Nemesis Daemon Hammer, I'm going to assume it has a Nemesis Daemon Hammer. By making the conversion, you're asking your opponent to keep track of additional things throughout the game. I don't think this is a generally fair thing to ask an opponent to do, so I never do it. To alextroy's point, if you want to do a weapon conversion, use something that isn't actually an option in the Codex. Use two smaller hammers in each hand or something like that.

In an organized play setting, you're likely to run into issues. WYSIWYG is frequently required.
