There's going to be a small painting competition in my hometown next year, and I'm thinking of doing a daemon prince of Khorne sitting on a skull throne. Since I'm fairly new at this, I'm starting the planning stage now and will begin work in January or February, with the competition happening in May.

So one major design challenge is how to create a skull throne. I'm considering using the GW skulls pack and layering it on a blob of resin perhaps 2 skull-layers deep to create a sort of skull-pile with a divot for the prince to sit on. Another option would be to model an upright chair with it, using some of the larger skulls as the "core."

Do you know the A Game of Thrones sword throne.

Like that, but made out of skulls.

I think Khorne hired Hieronymus Bosch and Hans Rudi Giger to do his interior design.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Black Cat Bases have (or had - I think they still do) a pack of about 100 28mm scale skulls for a reasonable price.

That'd be a pretty good way to get going.

I'd think about what to use for your base. you may be able to find some sort of chair ready made, or something else suitable, which could be covered in skulls.

I'd use cut-down sprues from the GW Skulls set to make the frame of the chair, then glue the skulls all over it until the frame is completely hidden. You'd probably need 2-3 boxes of skulls for a chair big enough to seat a DP. The GW Skulls set is by far the cheapest way to get skulls in bulk, AFAIK, and being plastic they're easier to work with than the many sets of resin skulls on the market.

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

Right, are we talking entirely skulls here? Or something like a "throne of bone" as it were? As I think you'll get better mileage out of the latter.

Toy dinosaurs and/or Halloween decorations can easily be sourced for its core (such as using the ribcage/spine as the thone's back) then you add in a load of skulls everywhere for the rest.
