Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

I'm returning to 40k after skipping several editions. I'm trying to formulate my first army (UltraMarines counts as Angry Marines), but I don't know the mechanics yet, which is causing problems with my army building, which in turn will drive my model purchasing.

Can I get an explanation of how wounding works in 8th? I get that AV is gone, and everything has wounds.

S4 vs T4 = 4+
S4 vs T3 = 3+
S4 vs T5 = 5+

Those are presumably the same.

S4 vs T6 = ? What's the rule now? Double plus one to need 6+ to wound? Difference of two? Does S6 wound T4 on a 2+? How do these things work these days?

If you are double strength or higher than the enemy toughness, you wound on a 2+.

If you are half strength or lower than the enemy toughness, you wound on a 6+.

Otherwise it's as you have it.

Also consider how AP works... a -1 AP gun will modify the enemy save by 1. So Heavy Bolters are very scary to marines now, because they wound on a 3+, and modify your save to 4+ instead of the 3+.

Autocannons are better against Tanks now too, because they have -1 AP but actually cause 2 damage per hit, so you'll wound on a 4+ vs rhinos and stuff, modify their save to 4+, and cause 2 damage per wound.

Guardsmen are way better now because they often get a save, even if it's only a 6+ Marines are worse now, because their saves almost always get modified :(

In the core rules it says how wound rolls work:
If S if double or more than T - 2+
If S>T - 3+
If S=T - 4+
If S<T - 5+
If S half or less than T - 6+
Every roll of 1 automatically fails.
