Finally Warhammer Quest comes to 40K. I played the original WHQ a lot, and always looked for a 40K equivalent.
So you can imagine that I was very curious and also a bit exited about the game.

I have not played it yet, but started painting some minis...

Obsidius Mallex in Sons of Horus Colours. I really dislike the current look of most chaos marines, therefore I used at least some colours that I like.

Pious Vorne, the pyromaniac zealot.

UR-025, the man of steel from an ancient forgotten time.
I painted him to fit my Mechanicus!

Beautiful work and clever use of some alternative minis. Also, thank you for painting the Man of Iron red, which has convinced me to do the same scheme on mine!

Very nicely done. It took a moment to realise that wasn't actually Janus Draik. I agree with Gordy - the Man of Iron looks much better in red (odd that, Tau mostly look better when not in Vior-la white too). For some reason it also makes the head look like a more integral part of the model...

I was beginning to think nobody was going to convert the Blackstone models. Do you have plans for the others?

OK, a slight conversion…

Obsidius Mallex with Chaos Marine bodyguards. I painted them again in the colours of the Sons of Horus.
In addition I swapped the backpacks for Mk II packs and added a Mk II helmet to tone them a bit down, I just do not like horns and too many pointed trophy racks...

And the always welcome scale comparison shot:

From left to right - Classic plastic Marine, BF Chaos Marine, Primaris
...somehow they have grown on the Blackstone Fortress...

Amallyn Shadowguide, the Eldar Ranger! Since I got a big Ulthwe army I changed the craftworld colours.
Many dislike the sculpt, I really really like her.
The only downer is the size, absolute scale creep as you can see below!!!

She looks lovely in a different scheme, I plan on painting her in my Craftworld's scheme too. Nice paint job man, her scale isn't too bad, pushes her as a character so she stands out over the normal troops a little more.

Wow thats a great comparison picture. Notice how the heads are pretty much the same size, amallyns legs and arms are way longer but her handare actually smaller!

They look good.

Worth noting that the other Ranger in Agis' picture is a very old model. She's not that off when placed with the current crop.

True, the proportions are way better on the new Ranger!

No, that's why I put the Guardian beside her!
I was expecting that she is taller than a 90s Ranger, but why 1 head taller as a Guardian?

These guys are great.
Im wery tempted to make my own marines Sons of Horus as well.

Just out of curiosity, why did you make the rangers coat black?
I see your other ranger has camo cloak, and for a skilled painter like yourself, plain black/grey feels like a missed opportunity.

Keep up the great work!

The Guardians are old models too.

They refreshed the sculpts awhile back, but didn't actually change anything.

Simple - Within the Blackstone fortress black seems the best camo cloak!

I think you could have pulled off a really cool camo scheme, personally. Hint of 'light' blending on the edges and rubble along the bottom.

The mini has at least 3 black to grey highlights, I just wanted it as subtle as it gets…
And "rubble along the bottom." is not my thing…

First of all, GREAT JOB! All those look fantastic and I really like the unique paint schemes (i.e. different the than the GW standard)

Secondly, I don't think there is too much of a scale creep for the Ranger, for 3 reasons:
1) the model you used to compare is a very old oop Ranger and the newer sculpts are rangers are taller (at least the ones that aren't crouching)
2) The BSF Ranger is a Character, not a regular Ranger, so it is to be expected that she would be slightly bigger to be more impressive and
3) She's wearing heels, or is on her toes, so obviously she'd be taller

Thanks for posting your painted Blackstone minis, I was anxiously waiting for the first batches to start coming in. You bring up an interesting point about the scale creep, and I'm not surprised to see it with the Eldar. I was expecting to see the same with the Kroot model I picked up, and it does follow the same pattern.

I think it's likely the heroes are larger for the game, and not a representation of what may happen in the future with larger releases.

Nice take on the drones!

You changed the exelent basing style -is it because the brown bases mess up the gold, or because the other models has a use in regular games?

Edit: hold on, I see there is some variation to all bases of different factions. Never mind.

Spoiler:

I wasn't meaning blending as in the paint techniques, but rather like light spilling out of a Blackstone Fortress' corridor! Same with the idea of rubble.

But that was just IMO. I think you have the chops to pull it off, I know I sure as hell don't.

And more WHQ BF minis!

Dahyak Grekh, the Kroot tracker. Again a big mini, but not as big compared to other Kroot as Amallyn Shadowguide. See him below together with a old conversion and a hound.

My first Negavolt Cultist, I converted him slightly, since I did no like the heads cables pointing forward so much. IMO it takes a lot of the forward motion from the mini.

Painted the 4 Ur-Ghuls and the failcast Dark Eldar Ur-Ghul.

In comparison to the new BF plastic the old resin mini is really dated…

And the remaining Negavolt Cultist are done, so far the most complex and time consuming paintjob, but I really like the result.
