Any of you like dark city? I actually did, and FTR it was not a matrix ripoff. It came out nearly a year before the matrix and the matrix reused a rooftop set from it, not the other way around.

I liked it more than the matrix personally.

Matrix reused SEVERAL locations as well as that rooftop set, since they were both shot in Sydney. Dark city mostly shot the externals late at night because it was much cheaper to do so (daylight exteriors required traffic shutdowns and road closures and everything that went with that.). Alex Proyas is a genius.
The bit where Mr Hand (Richard O'brien) says "It's time ..." sent chills down my spine.

I must however, admit to some bias. I have friends who worked on both the matrix movies AND Dark City (Sydney's FX community isn't that large, so this tends to happen a lot)

Yup, love this movie. Everything about it is glorious.

Whilst it has its flaws its an underappreciated gem and it's shame Matrix (and the gak forsaken sequels) kind of foghorned it out, plus Jennifer Connelly is rather bang on

I thought it was quite good. I wound up liking the Matrix better, but then I generally prefer action-adventure movies over dramatic ones, and Dark City was definitely more drama than action. In light of that, it says quite a bit about how good Dark City was that I like it as much as I do.

As my friend once put it. "Dark city is amazing. In the 3rd act it goes from zero to wtf psychic battles in no time flat."

I love dark city.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Great movie, very different from the Matrix. More of a deconstructed film noir than SF/action romp. I should rewatch both to see how they've held up 20 years later.

Dark City is a neat film that I really like. But I can acknowledge that it’s pretty flawed as a movie. Still, it’s so visually and narratively striking, I’ll take its flaws over a slicker, more efficient film like the Matrix.

I saw this movie when I was in high school, so it would have been out 3-4 years at the time. Honestly, I thought it was super creepy and strange. I didn't know it came out in the 90s, I thought it was a strange 80s movie.

I liked it though. It was a good watch. Haven't seen it since though. WAY better than The Matrix. But to be fair, burnt toast is better than The Matrix.

Try to watch the DC of it not the theatrical cut.

The TC gives away the movie's secret in the voiceover at the beginning.

I liked the fact that Keiffer Sutherland got to play a character very much removed from his badass, torture loving tough guy in "24" and carried it off excellently.

Trivia: The Mr. Hand character was conciefed to be played by Richard o'brien.

Mr. Wall, the very tall stranger, was played by the same actor who played the gyro captain in "the road warrior".

Well, it helps that he wasn't viewed that way at the time. As popular as that junk is, at the time he was better known for the 'brooding pretty boy' role- Lost boys, young guns, 3 Musketeers (the woeful disney version).

Prime time torture porn came later... and still makes me laugh that he ended up there.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

He's in both.
He's been in quite a few other films, too. He's not quite our "Michael Berryman" (actor with an odd face) but he's up there.

I watched it again this afternoon (director's cut) and noticed for the first time soooo many other recognisable faces amongst the ranks of the strangers. It's like a who's-who of Australian cinema and television actors (given how many "Strangers" there are.).

When they say "Shut it down, shut it down forever" i felt chilled to the bone... Great movie.

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Anywho, I recommend that as well. A good double bill I reckon.

Imagine a version of the matrix that makes sense and has stars who can actually act.

What exactly does "soon" mean anymore?!?

For as much as it seems popular to trash The Matrix, the first one was pretty good, the second one had its moments and was "OK" and yeah, the third one wasn't good.

DARK CITY is really good though - a fun, trippy ride!

I was offended by the racism in the matrix.
