Hi everyone, looking for experienced painters here. With the increase in Citadel paints prices I’m totally off of buying new paints from GW. For the most part this will just mean buying paints that are approximately the same. I don’t really care if my next squad of Striking Scorpions is slightly different shade of green. However, I play Siam Hann Eldar and would like to keep the same look for my Craftworld units. Does anyone know a good equivalent to:

Mephiston Red
Wild Rider Red
Fire Dragon Bright
And most importantly...
Bloodletter (glaze)

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Dakka has a paint compatibility chart here

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Here's the comparison chart I use - it's a Google sheet and provides a numerical value as to how close a match each colour is to the equivalents in other ranges

I can also recommend two mobile applications, hobby color converter and paintrack, both are very useful.

According to PaintRack, the closest the Bloodletter is Army Painter's Wrath, which is only available in a box, "Paint Set of Sin."

The next closest are Reaper's Bright Coral and Createx's Fluorescent Red.

Check it with hobby colour converter also.

Ah, forgot, that this is a glaze... Vallejo have transparent red for example, but it's not the same thing. I can only recommend scarlet red thinned down with glaze medium.

Hobby Color Converter shows no matches. I think you could use either of the ones I suggested and cut it with some glaze medium to get there. I don't think either of those brands is particularly pigment rich, so they are likely both pretty transparent to begin with.

Paintrack are making a mistake (we can consider it as so), trying to match normal paint to bloodletter glaze. Hobby colour converter shows no matches and it's correct, because no other companies are making pre-made glaze, there are only transparent paints (Vallejo transparent red for example). Vallejo have glaze medium (really handful product) so you can make your own glaze from any colour.

I feel fairly certain that what PaintRack is doing is taking the hexcode of one paint's hue and comparing it to other similar hexcodes from other brands. By and large, the paint's consistency is irrelevant to it's actual hue, although it's transparency could differ dramatically, given different paint brands level of pigmentation/consistency.

So, yes, you are right, none of what I suggested is actually exactly the same pre-made glaze as Bloodletter, but since you are also right, we can make any paint into a glaze, it hardly seems important if it's a premade glaze or not, unless you are completely averse to mixing it yourself.

Well seeing as there is no equivalent product I'd probably just suck up my principles for a moment a buy the Bloodletter from Citadel. There are times when staying adamant with your principles is important but in this case is probably not worth the trouble. Afterall it is only a 20 pence increase in price. I doubt you'll go bankrupt.

The other three will not be hard to find good if not better equivalents to, but GW glazes are so damn good. I seriously recommend staying with their glazes, and washes too. Better than any others I've used.

I've never used their glazes. In fact, I don't really use GW paint at all any more. What makes the glazes so good?

Serious question, I want to know if I am missing out on something,
