Now that there is a proper Goblin army, I'm going to start playing AoS. I've only played a single game before and I'm a little iffy on unit sizes.

Specifically, what does everyone think is a good unit size for Squig Hoppers and Boingrot Bounders? I'm not sure how to best manage having something effective to cross the battlefield and still do damage while not dying to extreme battleshock.

Any advice?

For things like goblins I like units of 40,

Also not forgetting that they have a terrain feature that is free that makes them immune to battleshock within its confines.

Thanks! But I was asking about Squiq Hoppers and Boingrot Bounders, specifically.

I think a unit of 10 seems pretty good for Bounderz, I plan on running them that way. Not sure on the Hoppers, they may be better in larger numbers but probably also 10 man units. Any bigger and you put more risk into their movement. Could roll well and get a good chunk of guys in quicker, or you could roll really low and have more models lagging behind from one roll.

Minimum unit size + as many more as you feel like painting up.

Your real limitation is how many you can fit inside buff auras. Pick a size, play some games. If you feel like you could easily have had a larger unit and still get your auras, make it larger. If fitting under auras was an issue, make it smaller.

Thanks! That makes good sense.

I wouldn't go above 15 max, and 15 would be for a buff-stacking build. It is a matter of buff stacking from my perspective; many buffs are a certain unit (as opposed to everything in range) which benefits a few larger units that can be buffed at once. On the other hand larger units are harder to maneuver and will probably end up with models stranded outside of combat range as Tiberius said.

Long story short; when in doubt go with 10.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

How many points do you typically play with?

Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.

I haven't started yet. I'm trying to figure out what to buy, by building lists. I'll probably play 1000 first, then move up to 2000.

If the minimum is 10 you're safer with 20. Stormcast shooting is, let's say, "terrifying" at times.

Take a look at unit sizes from WHFB. In that case it ranged from 5-10. Though as you are afraid of dying swiftly it would be prudent to take ten.

I think the buff area/unit # is a great way to think about army construction. I noticed the Dankhold Troggboss has an 18" 'wholly within' aura ability, so couple that with the mass amounts of tiny units of Troggoths in the Troggoth Herd battalion, that's a min-max situation for sure.
