So I purchased a few mdf buildings and they look too plain. I wanted to know if anybody knew where I could find bits to add detail to the buildings themselves, I.e. vents, embossing, lights etc.
I’m jus hoping to make them look a bit more interesting.

Kromlech do a range of great incidental bits and bobs light lights and gauges.

Also if you can get access to a 3d printer, check out Thingiverse for doors, grilles, hatches and random industrial doodahs

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Texture mediums and basing paints such as this...
Spoiler:
...and others can be used creatively to break up the monotonous flatness of MDF.

  • Thin and patchy for rust and mould - paint with a brush

  • Smoothed out for concrete, render or stucco - drag across a large straight edge (I use lollypop sticks)

  • Thickly for stonework and crumbling rumble - either sculpt (quick but takes longer to dry) or build up in layers (more precise takes longer to complete)

  • I have managed to achieve all these results with just Vallejo Earth Texture Acrylic. It comes in large pots and takes primer, paints, sanding and sculpting well. But any texture paints you have access to can create similarly interesting results. Lacking those? Even a bit of glue, sand and sprue bits does wonders.

IIRC Ebay has some 3d printed detail bits as well as shape ways.

    Zinge industries is another

The more frugal idea may be to get some cereal box cardboard, straight edge and a knife to cut out panels to add extra details.

    Spoiler:

If you're into scratch building at all, there's a metric ton of ideas in the LoER Terrain Contest threads: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/769886.page

If you're looking to purchase then see if there's a model railroad store near you. They should have lots of accessories to jazz up your terrain.
